Well, I'd say screw Cancun/Cozumel and go to Playa del Carmen if you were going to go to Mexico at all.
That said, if you're looking for something different, I'd go for Jamaica, too, since I've never been there.

Cozumel is a lot more laid back than Cancun, or even Playa del Carmen. One night I was there, the island had pretty much shut down after 9. If you are looking for "night life" you'd be better off in Playa del Carmen, you can just take the boat over to Coz for the day and hang at Margaritaville.
I can't speak to Jamaica, I've never been there.
Edit: If you do stay in Cozumel, you might look at the Cozumel Palace. It's right in town, you can walk to anywhere.

Been to Cancun, Cozumel, Jamaica (Negril&OR).
Favorite was Negril, Jamaica.

I know it's not on your list but it is small, safe and beautiful!!

I would say Jamaica, definitely Negril. There is a Margaritaville and Rick's Cafe is awesome too.
Although, I just got back from Aruba on Saturday and it was AWESOME!
We stayed at the Riu Palace, the weather was perfect, beaches are beautiful, and it is very safe. Nightlife is in abundance also, but no Margaritaville.(out of hurricane belt too............)
Cozumel is the best snorkeling and diving, but not the best beaches.
