Contratian that I am, I always find threads like this a little disturbing. To me they come across as wanting everyone to think alike and any dissenting view is seen as "negative". I prefer to live in the real world where different people, even if they all have something in common, have different opinions, like different things and don't find any of those differences "negative", "threatening" or "insulting". It's OK not to think everything Jimmy does is great, it's OK not to think a setlist that almost 1/3 cover songs is great, it's OK not to think every product he's shilling is great. And most of all, it's OK for someone to say they don't think those things are always great. Really, it is.

"Disturbing" yet also a very refreshing. I was a complete cockeyed optimist in my younger days. I find myself getting more cynical and negative the older I get, and remember watching my Mom do the same thing as she aged. I am trying desperately not to convey that on my kids. I'm not saying we have to agree, I never want anyone to be the same, act the same or have the same opinion; I like the world mixed up. But I also really appreciate any positive attitude thrown my way. Anyone remember the book, "I'm OK, You're OK"?

I understand some of the frustration that people are having as I have experienced the same thing, but when it comes down to it, Jimmy has brought a great amount of joy to my life, as I am sure he has for others on this site. Instead of complaining about how commercial he has gotten, or set lists not changing, I choose to embrace the great things about him and the band. Just two weeks ago I went to see him at Alpine, and both shows in Chicago. The Saturday show in Chicago I brought my parents and sister along to see him, their are few other artists that I could do that with and watch my family have a great time. I've spent many days this summer sitting in my adirondack chair from Margaritaville.com reading A Salty Piece of Land and other books, sipping on Landsharks and Boat Drinks, and listening to shows online. Somedays are spent playing golf with my 5 o'clock somewhere bag from Margaritaville.com that I don't regret paying a bunch of money for. I am also currently planning my trip to Vegas the 2nd weekend of October to spend a weekend out there with a good friend I don't see that often and hopefully make more friends out there. All of these things would be possible without Jimmy, but they wouldn't quite be the same. I am grateful all the time that Jimmy is still kickin ass, I am a younger parrothead that just started going to shows in 2001, and instead of complaining, I just hope I will be seeing shows and hanging out with fellow parrotheads in 2011.
Very, very well said

Absolutely disagree.

I live in Grand Haven, Michigan where I freeze my a$$ off for half the year.

From now on, when I want an escape, instead of giving
Mr. Margaritaville, Inc $310 just for concert tickets for 2, I will be putting that cash into a trip to the islands. 3 skipped concerts = airfare for 2 to Jamaica or the Bahamas.

The "escape" Jimmy is selling now is a total and utter fraud. Count me out.

Those of you who will kow tow and say "we're not worthy" in adoration that he is still taking your money astound me. Enjoy, I guess.

I agree with yourpoint. At the same time, I think some people, myself included, just wanted to counter all the negative posts around here lately and let it be known that a lot of people still enjoy what Jimmy is doing.

I agree with both points. While lately I have been unhappy with what I have gotten (or lack thereof) for my money, I still love JB's music and his storytelling. BUT, those two things that I love are two things that I havent seen in high quality in the past couple years. Hence my unhappiness with the direction he is heading. Some people may love the direction he is going, and there's nothing wrong with that, to each their own. Personally, aside from all the marketing, products, and commercial stuff, I miss the good ol' JB and the high quality music and storytelling he captivated me with in the first place.

To me, JB is becoming more of a high profile commercialized staple than a down to earth island loving ruffian.

I miss that ruffian.

I know somebody who is very new to the whole "parrothead" thing. They're just out of college and they don't post here.

However, I got an email from them indicating that this year they were doing Alpine, both Chicago shows, Philly, Pittsburgh and Pine Knob.

All were lawn seats obtained from scalpers for about $100 a ticket from what they said.

I sent back an email suggesting that instead of dropping so much money, they just go to the Paris show. I told them how they'd possibly get to meet Jimmy and hear some amazing songs he doesn't play very often anymore.

The first question - "How good is the tailgating in Paris?"

Some people are in it ONLY for the party. Now I think almost 90% of the people care only about the party. Those are the folks puking, causing fights and making it completely a drag when compounded with the tired setlist.

I just don't think it's fun anymore.

And again I ask this type of question:
Why are you posting in a thread that was clearly put here to give some of the people who post here some place to say it's still OK to like Jimmy? There are so many negative threads to contribute to, I am curious why you need to try to sell it here, too? Trust me, I whole-heartedly understand each of your viewpoints. I just choose not to have an entertainer's every step govern his lasting achievements or my liking/disliking the songs. I love the old stuff, and yet, I love the now.

hmm.

I wonder how much of the lead paint got into the Kool-aid when he went through the fence?

And do glasses with ice just appear in the kids' hands? He's not just a giant pitcher of Kool-aid, he's magical. :P
