Just a little fact....traditionally the US has always been the leader in swimming. And I truly believe the only reason that China has more gold medals overall is because they are falsifying the ages of the girls in the gymnastics arena

Could they not strip them of their medals in gymnastics if they proved they were too young?

No they are not. The Chinese proved the age by supplyin passport with all the ages showing them to be 16 or older....sarcasm
