It was an awesome run.chippewa wrote:Wow, Tomescu of Romania dominated in the women's marathon. Awesome sight to see her run into the stadium and take that final lap. 38 years old, oldest winner ever. Great finish for silver/bronze, too.
Not only an incredible swimmer and one of the best (if not THE best) athletes of all time, he's also a top notch human being."I don't even know what to feel right now," Phelps said. "There's so much emotion going through my head and so much excitement. I kind of just want to see my mom."
China has a program designed to create gold medalists...the US doesn't. If we took our kids away from their families at 3 years of age we would be the gold medal leader. And those silver and bronze medals mean just as much when those athletes race/compete their hearts out, clean and with good sportsmanship. It isn't all about winning. As for the population thing, I'm with ya Molly. Of course larger countries are going to have more competitors overall. But the subject flip flopped between that and individual sports. Does the US actually have a higher percentage of competitive swimmers vs. Australia? I'm not sure that has actually been determined.sunseeker wrote:Just a little fact....traditionally the US has always been the leader in swimming. And I truly believe the only reason that China has more gold medals overall is because they are falsifying the ages of the girls in the gymnastics arena
Exactly! A phenomenal talent like Michael Phelps could have come from ANY country in the world - large or small.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:China has a program designed to create gold medalists...the US doesn't. Bottom line...it can be anyone's competition to win, no matter where you're from.
Yep.. for me I;m just excited to see the best athlete win. (except in the case of China IF they are using and abusing underage children) I was jumping up and down when Bolt won for Jamaican... it was the first gold for their country...ever.....Big Phan wrote:Exactly! In my mind, the spirit of the Olympics is a coming together of nations.
