Archer Lorig to carry US flag at closing ceremony
Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Archer Khatuna Lorig has been selected the flag bearer for the United States at Sunday's closing ceremony of the Olympics.

Lorig was selected by captains of each sport of the US Olympic team.

"Being named the US flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony is almost like winning a gold medal, maybe even better," said Lorig. "I thought I could win a gold medal in competition, but I never thought I'd have this opportunity. I am truly, truly so proud to be an American citizen and part of the U.S. Olympic Team."

Lorig has represented three different countries in the Olympic Games. She represented the Unified Team of the former Soviet Union at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, where she won the bronze medal in the team competition. She competed for Georgia at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Games in Sydney.

Lorig immigrated to the United States and missed out on the 2004 Olympic Games as she was not yet a U.S. citizen. She received her citizenship in 2005 and competed in her fourth Olympic Games this year.

Lorig made it to the quarterfinals of the women's individual elimination round before falling to world record holder Yun Ok-Hee of Korea.
I have to say I'm disappointed... :-?

Nice piece in the paper today about Sheila Taormina, the first woman to compete in three different sports in the Olympics.

long url

1996 swimming, gold medal
2000 triathlon, sixth place
2004 triathlon, 23rd
2008 pentathlon, 19th

Considering a couple of her events, I'll give her credit for about 7 or 8 different sports.

Don't they usually pick an interesting human interest story, as opposed to someone that starred in the Games, or is that more for the opening ceremonies? Who were you thinking of?

I didn't think it would be Phelps at all...the Olympics have been oversaturated with him. But I really thought Jason Lezak had one of the best (if not THE best) come from behind performance of a lifetime stories. To me that defines the Olympic spirit far more than someone competing for 3 different countries. I've always had issues with that. :-? I think the human interest is mainly for the Opening Ceremonies.

Dara Torres would have been my close second.

Lezak would have been a good choice. Phelps will be in London anyway, he's there as part of the closing ceremonies. Something about handing the summer games over to London. I would have guessed an UK athlete would be there, but many Phelps is just one of many.

Actually he's in London for "professional obligations", but London decided to include him in the hand off since he is there and since he did so much to hype up these Olympics.

Miles 18 thru 21 were some of the greatest sporting highlights I've ever seen. Hope SportsCenter shows it so I can get in on tape.

Yeah - still dont think they have figured what ingredients are going to go in the dish "stephanie rice" yet - they have been running competitions

Marathon? I watched it - the ending was quite inspiring - wont say who won - but USA is not that far out of it.
