I find myself compelled to respond to some of the Pro's and Con's put forth in the first post of this thread. I'm not going to respond to every point made, but there are a few that I both agree and take issue with. First, I do recognize that in this day and age, Jimmy Buffett is first and foremost a business. I give him full props for coming up through the music biz the hard way and don't harbor any ill will towards the slew of recent commercial properties he has created. Mararitaville, CIP, alcoholic beverages, and now casinos. The lack of a business sense has been the downfall of many a musician, and the fact he has embraced this aspect of the music industry only adds to his overall success. The fact that he himself controls many of the different businesses instead of a industry manager makes it all the more noteworthy.

Next, I have to take some issue with the setlist issue. While there will always be a certain number of songs that he seemingly must perform for those present it seems to me that he has added several more obscure songs to his repertoire as of late. AAAH, CITJ, TAR, NW, or pretty much any song where the majority of the crowd either sits down and goes quiet, or goes to get more liquor. The frequency of songs such as these seems to have increased in recent years, and that is one of the things that has kept me happy. I'm no fan of the Springsteen covers, but as long as he finishes with one of his older works I'm not going to complain...too much. Once upon a time, I remember seeing an interview with JB, where he was asked the question; "What would be your dream concert?". His reply was, in effect, to sing whatever song he wanted, especially some of his less popular songs. I want to say this was from his first 60 Minutes interview, but I cannot swear to that and I profusely apologize if I'm mis-quoting. Still, I don't think it's fair to say that he is only catering to his younger fans. I believe he is playing more of his older songs than ever before and maybe, some of the fans who only come to hear the old standbys will be compelled to look deeper into his catalogue of music.

Now to the Lawn/Crowd issue. I don't think there's anybody here who if they've been going to JB shows for 10 years or more will dispute that the attitude of the crowd has changed. Whether this is for better or worse is obviously the cause for debate, so I'll offer my personal opinion. Yes, the crowds definetely seem younger. I can't say if this is beneficial to JB's financial empire, but it has served to change the way I view going to shows these days. The overall increase in rude, agressive behavior has caused many of my friends to stop going to shows, and while I so far am holding out, I find myself seriously considering shelling out for pavillion seats next year. I realize there will always be bad apples in every bunch, but I refuse to chalk the ever increasing number of fights/near fights I've seen in the past 5 years up to pure coincidence. So, to directly respond to phansheridan's initial post, I certainly do not find some of "your" behavior on the lawn to be the best, in fact I find some of it appalling. I can't say whether this "younger energy" is beneficial to JB's bottom line, but I have a feeling that no matter if his shows continue to sell out, someday things may get to a point where he decides to stop touring altogether, or at least in the US. Incidentally I also have a feeling that I will have stopped going to shows long before then.

Finally, as far as the teleprompter goes, I can't say that his use of one affects my concert experience one bit. It doesn't seem that he pays that close attention to it anyway. As long as he is having a good time on stage and brings the energy I've come to expect to the show, he can have somebody feeding him lines through an earpiece for all I care. I'll still enjoy it.

*Sigh* I really didn't read this thread with the intention of getting up on a soapbox, but there's just some things in that first post that I really felt strongly about and I hope I've stated my case in a fairly rational manner. I honestly think that if more people really listened to Buffet's lyrics and gave them some thought the world might be a better place.

Sail on Phriends, have a good week :pirate:

Pro: He is still having fun. I have seen him twice this summer and never saw him frown. The whole time, I was not frowning. I am heading quickly to 50 and I hope if I live to 60, I can do anything and smile for three hours. The music takes me away from where I work daily, to a place where I wish I could be. Love the atmosphere.
Con: NONE!

Pros:
He has more great songs in his reporitore than he did when he was 30 or 40.
AND he still preforms them for us.
