I know this is an age-old question, and has been discussed in older threads, but after seeing another topic here with the the term "Trop Rock"(which I personally don't particularly care for)...
What category or style do you like to think best describes Jimmy's music?
Some years ago, I heard his "genre" described as Country Calypso, and I've liked that term ever since
Whattya think?
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!
I picked other. I don't think you can categorize his music into one particular term. Some of it's definately country, some Caribbean style and some folk. It really depends on the song.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

I thought you were going to ask if he should cover this song with Marie Osmond as a stage guest in Vegas...
With the pedal steel guitar in most songs. It's gotta be country.
But then it has steel drums, so it's gotta be trop rock.
On the other hand, I don't really know.
I know this is off the subject but I am new to this....has anyone heard that the Comcast center in MA is not allowing any party's before the concert, that anyone found with alcohol will not be allowed into the concert?? Has anyone heard of such nonsense? I don't want to go all the way there and find out they won't let me in. I will have everyone to my house if that's the fact.
Trop Rock. It's always been around. It's really country singing about beaches or islands. Buffett has cornered the market but he's not the only one that represents. Dirt Band, Jackson Browne, Leon Russell, and a whole bunch of newer Buffett wanna be's, to be found on Tropical Dreams .com. Not a bad thing, just a thing.
I picked "other" (because I also agree with Connie. )
Some of it is rock, some more folk, some definitely "island-y and I've heard the term "Gulf & Western" tossed about as well ...
but I just don't think it can be buttonholed into one genre.
In Boston with... "this caribbean soul I can barely control and Long Island's always here in my heart"

It is something unique that can not be thrown into one simple category. That is what makes his style so special. I chose other because there really isn't anything else to compare him to.
It is Gulf and Western, that's the term Jimmy has used off and on over the years to describe his music. I believe that it to be Singersongwriterpopcountryrockjazzislandworldunbelievably fun music!

I like the idea of Gulf and Western... but the term also reminds me a bit of an oil company

could it be because of Gulf Oil & Gas?

Gulf and western is a term used to describe the music genre of American popular music singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and other similar sounding performers.
