This area they are shutting down, is HUGE. It's one of the most traveled area of Denver each and every single day.

DENVER - The Colorado Department of Transportation has announced a significant closure for August 28 when the Democratic National Convention will move to INVESCO Field.

A 5.5-mile portion of Interstate 25 through Denver will be closed from the interchange with I-70 to the interchange with 6th Avenue starting at 5:30 p.m. until the conclusion of the event.

"I-25 will be closed for just a short period of time but it's necessary to ensure a safe event for attendees," said CDOT Executive Director Russ George. "While we recognize that motorists traveling through the area will likely experience some delay, we are doing everything possible to keep those delays to a minimum."

During the convention, CDOT will restrict any construction and maintenance work that involves closing a lane or roadway within a 10-mile radius of downtown Denver in order to minimize additional impacts to travelers. Also, from midnight August 23rd through midnight August 29th, no oversize/overweight vehicles will be allowed to travel on the I-25 corridor between I-70 and 6th Avenue.

Stoopid. :x
If they tried this with I-93, I-90, and Route 1 in Boston, it would shut the city down.
You have a short memory, aero. In 2004 they shut down I-93 and North Station while the Demmycrats were in town.

the PM of England is probably in less danger than the DNC... sad commentary on the state of the world, but if anything happened to him he'd probably get less press than a convention attack would....

Have the convention right here in Oxford, Iowa.
We could use Amos Kelsey's barn as the auditorium, and Fred Carson could transport the super-delegates on his hay wagon.
OH, and Lillian Visktchel could feed everyone with her DEE-LISH-OUS corn dogs.

Transportation wouldn't be a problem-there's only one road in and out of town.
Accomodations wouldn't be a problem either-there are no hotels here, but Milt Janacek has a couple extra sleeping bags in his garage.

Hopefully this would ease the inconvenience on our friends in Denver who will be going through enough rough times soon when the Broncos begin the N.F.L. season. :-?

I'd vote for any party that would do that.
At least that party wouldn't be totally clueless as to what goes on in the real world.

I'm not trying to read anything into your message, but you're NOT calling Iowa the "real world," are you? :-?

Sort of. BUT, if you block off a lot of the area from people, then it may not have an effect.
The revenue from the hotel use and restaurant use, and the tax revenue alone are enormous, Tourist things for those who come in early or stay late, or for spouses who come in as well as shopping.

Remember that during the day, much of what goes on is smaller meetings and things that most delegates are not involved in so they are out spending money during the day, attending the convention in the evening and then probably going out for a late meal.

And it isn't just the conventioneers but the press in covering the convention, and, hopefully the good impression it gives to the rest of the world (this coming from someone who remembers the horror of Chicago '68!)

The Lost Manatee wrote:Gee, I remember when the VP visited Denver last year and they shut down the airport for 2 hours before and after his arrival and again for his departure, Pena Blvd, I 70, I 25 and Speer Ave. It was supposedly a tiny disruption. The only reason I didn't miss my flight was that the airport was shut down and the inbound plane had diverted and was 6 hours late arriving into Denver. Then we got to sit for 2 more hours waiting for the VP to leave town.

This seems to be the price that we, the people, get to pay to have big conventions, events and/or important people visit our fair cities.

I rode the bus into Downtown when the Republican Convention was held in Dallas in 1980. No problems.
...loved watching those guys walk around in their wool suits in 110+ degree heat.

It was 1984, not 80, and there were nutbags all over the freaking city. This one group splashed paint all over downtown businesses, stole a U.S. Flag from MBank Building and burned it at city hall plaza. The guy that stole and burnt the flag was arrested and convicted.

I was working in downtown Dallas and our building was locked down.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.
