Leave it the heck alone.

Especially if the term "GOD" offends liberals.

Brad, I mean this in the nicest way possible. Do not tell my Mother and Brother (both Methodist ministers) that I'd love to hear one of your sermons. Rarely do they get me to sit through theirs. (Granted, I've been listening to them a lot longer, but still....)

and the black/white of me says "If there is separation of church and state, then let's have it" and pull the motto off. Ironically, if people can't find it so simply and comfortably, they might search a little harder for it.

Well said.

Another interesting perspective on the way Americans relate to their particular brand of Christianity by Stephen Prothero, chair of the religion department at Boston University . . .
. . . Approximately 75 percent of adults, according to polls cited by Prothero, mistakenly believe the Bible teaches that "God helps those who help themselves." More than 10 percent think that Noah's wife was Joan of Arc. Only half can name even one of the four Gospels, and -- a finding that will surprise many -- evangelical Christians are only slightly more knowledgeable than their non-evangelical counterparts.

. . .

The book's main concern, though, is ignorance about the role of religion in American history. Prothero dates the beginning of the long decline in our religious literacy to the Second Great Awakening of the early 1800s. The fervor of America's periodic cycles of revivalism, rooted in a personal relationship with God rather than in theology handed down by learned clergy, has always had a strong anti-intellectual as well as spiritual component.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 02073.html

With regard to the poll question, I don't think the phrase "In God We Trust" belongs on our currency. But I'm not sure the effort to have it removed is worth the trouble (BIG trouble  - as we all know from current events, folks who like the trappings of religiosity and are convinced that only THEY happen to be talking to God, but who, in their ignorance and fervor, miss the important message, can cause a lot of trouble for the rest of us here in the world).

I don't agree with the anti-religion crowd that the constitution bans even the mention of God or a religious holiday in any government area. God is mentioned many times in these same documents. The founders were against state sponsored religion - like the Church of England or even the Catholic church and the countries that endorsed it during the inquisition era. Because I use a dollar bill does it mean that I believe in a God? Not really. That phrase doesn't really effect my belief that there is a scientific explanation for all events. There are many principles of religion that are very good and I am glad our country is a religious society. I do wonder sometimes if courthouses listed 10 good ideas instead of 10 commandments, would the anti-religion crowd be protesting and fighting to remove the list?

Besides, are anyone's rights really being violated because they don't agree with a phrase on the currency of our country? Really, if this is really a priority issue in our country, then we are a lot better off than people realize.

I just talked to God. He says he doesn't really care what your money says as long as you put it in the offering plate on Sunday.

Honestly, who uses cash anymore? Or takes the time to read it? They could change it to "In Goose We Trust" and it would take the average American 12 years before they noticed the change.

I for the life of me can't figure out why a phrase that has appeared on US currency since 1864 all of a sudden offends every one and needs to be removed. What has changed? I honestly think the US Government (read unproductive and red tape) has alot more pressing issues on their plate then what appears on the US currency. Thats just my opinion.

Live Poll
in a perfect world - YES!!!

but then again, there would be a lot involved in changing it. prolly not work getting bent out of shape over. [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif]

but that sorta thing is something that should prolly be avoided in the future. and maybe next time they are going to add new security features or something, so they're gonna be changing it anyway…..
