Place: College
Time: Long ago

Beer/Wine: 18
Hard Liquor: 21

Sure, some under-age people drank. Most of them got drunk. (Duh, they were under-age.) Most did not get dead or kill other people. Maybe some got pregnant or woke up with strange stories to tell. (Guess I was unlucky.)

Place: here
Time: now

Alcohol: 21

Binge drinking and under-age drinking exceeds what happened in Example A (above). States get Fed money for highways.

Is this a Win/Win?

I've always believed the drinking age should be 18 AND 16 to 18 year olds should be allowed to drink with their parents. If on their Junior drivers license it listed their parents names, when they were carded they could ensure their parents were in fact with them. Then kids could be taught to drink responsibly. C'mon, at 20 and 364 days they can't drink but then the next day "Hey, lets go get drunk!!!" That's like putting a 16 year old in a NASCAR racer the day they get their license. Allowing 16-18 year olds to drink with their parents will allow them to determine their tolerances and hopefully prevent some of those pregnancies/ date rapes and other horror stories from our youth.
If an 18 year old can go to war, then he should be able to have a beer with the boys after work. I know, I went thru it. All day I was expected to do a mans work, but at 4pm when the "men" were heading to the bars, my underage buddies and I headed back to the barracks. I could never understand the reasoning.

I sort of agree with this....Yep I drank BEFORE I was twenty one. ;)
So the day I turned 21, at work I get this lady telling me "You're legal now!" and I'm thinking "legal for what?"

The same thing more or less happened with Prohibition in the 30's.... Didn't stop anyone from drinking and was more trouble to enforce.

I have always maintained that we need to establish one age at what point an individual is considered an adult. If it is okay for an 18 year old to enter into a contract and/or join the army, then it should be okay for the 18 year old to drink and to take responsibility for his or her actions. If you are going to restrict rights until 21 then deny 18, 19 and 20 years the right to vote, to serve on juries, to enlist in the military, in short to be consider a legal adult. It should be either you are or you aren't an adult, that's it.

again: most states allow a 14 year old to be tried for murder as an adult. Not advocating a 14 year old drinking age, but the concept of uniformity would be nice.
