The Weather Channel has some raw footage of the storm. It doesn't look that bad at all- there are actually surfers in the water looking to catch a wave and the southernmost point marker is wrapped in plastic.

I was thinking they covered it to protect the paint from being sandblasted off, but only the top two feet or so was covered. I wonder what the thinking is behind that?

I got the one of the kite surfer getting a mouthful of sand, and then being dim enough to hang on when he could feel himself going airborne again

I think those guys are actually attached to the kite with a harness. He was along for the ride if he wanted to be or not.
