And since it's a pretty much a sure thing that McCain isn't going to be able to put an end to hurricanes in the future, and future hurricanes will continually shut down oil rigs, WHY isn't investing in MORE alternative fuels a better idea than MORE drilling off shore ????

Another reason for alternative fuel
Looks like hurricane season is gonna pick up big time now. If Gustav continues on it's projected course thru the Gulf and shuts down the oil rigs, they are saying it will cut off approx. 1.1 MILLION barrels a day !!!

'cause there's more off-shores than just in the Gulf and they're not shutting down permanently, just until the storm passes and they repair any damage.
No problem and no argument about needing to find alternative fuels (except ethanol maybe). Lets do BOTH. That way, we can deal with the problem now, and look to improve the future. Alternative fuels are on the distant horizon. What do we do until then????

There are plenty of fuels available now. No need to spend taxpayers money finding more. Nuclear is used in many places. We are embarrassingly behind most of the world with this technology even though we were the first to harness the power of the atom. Geothermal is available, even wind is expanding fly over Texas and the midwest and you see windfarms everywhere. There is also plenty of oil and coal in the US. By tapping into the oil reserves specifically, the $$ spent for the oil would stay in our country instead of going over to the middle east to fund destabilizing activities.
