Say good-bye to high monthly phone bills--and hello to an easy, cost-saving way to make local and long distance calls--with this MagicJack phone adapter. All you need is a phone with a plug-in cord, a computer with a Windows XP operating system or higher, and a broadband connection.
The winner of PC Magazine's Editor's Choice Award for January 2008, this innovative product enables you to make calls right over the Internet. Just plug your phone cord into the MagicJack adapter, plug the adapter into the USB port on your computer, follow the simple on-screen registration directions--and that's it! Within minutes, you can dial out and receive unlimited calls in the US and Canada for no additional charge--and continue to do so year after year for a low annual fee.
With MagicJack, you get a new virtual phone number--but you get to choose the area code from a list of available area codes. So, if you're a small business owner, you can select a New York or Los Angeles number so clients think you have a big city office. If you live in Chicago but your family lives in Atlanta, you can pick an Atlanta number so your loved ones never incur long distance charges when they call to chat. Plus, because your area code is not tied to your location, you can keep this virtual phone number no matter how many times you move.
This device can reduce your use of your landline--or replace it altogether. Turn your computer on to make outgoing or receive incoming calls. Calls never interfere with what you're doing on screen or online. Then, when your computer is turned off, calls simply go to voice mail. Call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID, and directory assistance are also included. In fact, this little plug-and-talk phone adapter gives you nearly everything you're already getting from your current phone company--except those big monthly bills. From MagicJack.
* Unlimited local and long distance calling in United States and Canada
* First year service included; subsequent years available for $19.95; pre-paid packages available
* Voice mail, call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID, directory assistance, and enhanced 911 at no additional charge
* Requires Windows XP, Vista, or Intel-based Mac OS
* Requires broadband, high-speed Internet, cable Internet, DSL, WiFi, or WiMax with a bandwidth speed of 128 kb/s

I've had Vonage for 2+ years now and absolutely love it. My only complaint is the current lack of a local phone number for my area, but they're getting closer.
As for 911, once you do their registration, it works just fine. I only had to use it once, and they knew who I was and the address I was calling from.

Vonage is like $15 a month, this is $20 a year after the first year which is included in the purchase price of the adapter.Skibo wrote:Sounds like a Vonage type service. This broadband telephony is OK, but sound quality isn't always as good. You most likely will not have 911 service.
QVC has it for $36.28 as an introductory rate if anyone is interested.
