Agreed - nice Thoreau quote. On the whole boring vs. meaningful thing... it's interesting the different perspectives everyone brings.

And I'd also agree with most of the others, living a "meaningful" life is something I value more than whether or not it's a boring life.

Guess I'm hoping to do both... live a life that gives help/joy/comfort to others AND have a great, interesting time along the way. At least I sure HOPE the two aren't mutually exclusive. (I don't THINK they are!)

With an 8 year old, 7 year old and 4 year old, who has time to be bored. I can't even imagine a whole day with absolutely nothing to do. In the past 8 1/2 years I have never been away from all three of my children for more than 4 hours (okay, when I sleep maybe... but even that's hit or miss).

Do I have a boring life? No. Am I bored sometimes? Sure.
But it's those moments that make me appreciate the times in between!

I totally agree. I'm always telling my kids that. It's good to be bored sometimes. Don't expect every moment of life to be exciting. How are you going to be creative if you never have down-time?

Nope after my mom died at 51 years of age i made a promise to myself to not take life for granted and enjoy it to the fullest! and that's just what i am doing!

From the perspective of being a student and practitioner of Buddhism, boredom is connected to craving and attachment which are to be given up.

The human mind thrives on novelty, so things that were once a source of pleasure can become tedious after a time. Though our lives are full, boredom lurks around every corner because we innately long for new experiences.

What about the now? We get so busy with something else, someone else, somewhere else; never now, never this. You may be eating a marvellous meal, delicious cuisine, but already you are thinking about the movie you are going to go to afterwards. You go to a park with beautiful flowers and you look at them. At first you are struck by the colours and shapes, but within a few moments you are thinking about something else. How short our attention span is: beautiful things only hold our attention for a few moments. The ordinary has a poor chance of interesting us for more than a few moments.

I changed my focus to this perspective about 10 years ago.
Being acutely aware of the "now" makes one much more prepared for what may come.
