Hard to believe I've missed this post 'til now. Grew up on the Beatles and the Monkeys, my older sisters and brothers made sure of that. My youngest daughters name is Penny Lane.....really. Did anyone catch the PBS special on Great Performances with Paul at Apple Studios showing how they recorded all of the Beatles albums on a freakin' four track.....even St. Peppers. It was amazing and if you're into recording, worth going on PBS website and purchasing. They were so ahead of their time in a very simple way that can be done today in your living room. Too cool. And Paul is still adorable.....of course so is Ringo.....

Funny, I never would've guessed you to be that old (you remembering the 4-track tape players). I definately remember those things, and the acutal tapes were the size of a suitcase.

Yes, they were definately ahead of their time, proven by every album of theirs from Revolver & Sgt. Pepper on. (Their previous albums were great too).

How refreshing this is-I not ony get to "meet" fellow Jimmy Buffett fans here, but other Beatles & Monkees fans as well.

On a side note, a friend of mine was recently in Liverpool and emailed me a picture of the street sign at the original Penny Lane. Too cool! I put it in my daughters baby book....

Indeed it was Livin' It Up from the Tales From Margaritavision video.
The Monkees didn't DAMN NEAR invent music videos, they DID invent music videos, and yes, Sir Robert Michael Nesmith was definately the most talented of the Monkees.
He and Peter Tork were the only professional musicians of the four of them.
The other two (Micky Dolenz and David Jones) were each professional actors.

P.S.-Michael Nesmith's mother is also credited for having invented the "white out"-the liquid stuff used in offices to correct typing mistakes.
I don't know what I did more of over the years-listened to the music of the Monkees, or use white out to correct my gaffes.
Of the 432 actors who cast for the roles of The Monkees, these were the four chosen. One of the ones who DIDN'T get a part as one of the bandmembers was Steven Stills. Some of you may have heard of him.
Mickey Dolenz did have a great set of pipes though ..... there are a few Monkees' songs where he really took over (Steppin' Stone was simply incredible). Dolenz sang lead on most of the Monkees' hits.
Oddly the least talented Davy Jones was the most popular. He did after all take Marcia Brady to her prom (as well as being featured on umpteen zillion Seventeen Magazine covers).

Well, I was a pre-teen then. Some things never change. I don't recall a lot of guys on the cover of Tiger Beat who have since been inducted into anyone's music hall of fame. But, he was so cute!

I was hoping that more people here would salute "Nez" on what he has

accomplished.

Oh sure Linda Ronstadt sang the song "Differnt Drum" great with

the "Stone Ponies" but Mike Nesmith wrote, yes "WROTE" the song.

yesterday on yahoo messenger, i was talking to a lady who lives in the santa cruz mountains in northern california. she allowed that she knows mike nesmith and she said that he lives in carmel, ca. also in another chat room, there were 2 guys talking music, and one of them said that he has played music with mike nesmith. small world

I was a huge fan of The Monkeees. It was just good fun music. "Sometime in the Morning" was one of my favorites. All great tunes.

I always loved the fact that Jimi Hendrix opened for them on their first tour

I asked my coworker, who likes to do that thing where you connect any celebrity to Kevin Bacon in seven steps or less, to connect Mike Nesmith to Kevin Bacon. Here's what he came up with:

Mike Nesmith to Davy Jones. Davy Jones made an appearance in the Brady Bunch movie with Gary Cole. Gary Cole was in Talledega Nights with Wil Ferrell. Wil Ferrell was in Anchorman with Tim Robbins, who was in Mystic River w/ Kevin Bacon.
