Okay. Remarkable story, yes .... but I read it three times and nowhere does it say HOW/WHY the two were floating out in the open ocean without life vests. Did they fall out of a boat? Capsize in a boat? Just swim too far out from the shore?

It says in the first paragraph that a rip current swept them out to sea. [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

Yes, from the inlet and swept "out to sea". We're left to assume, I suppose, that they were "swimming" in the inlet and went out too far.

That's the best story I have read today. What a great story :D

I have family that lives down in that area and my Uncle Tony gives tours of the lighthouse. Next time I am down there I am going to look a lot differently at the lighthouse

Ponce Inlet, Florida, is a town with beaches and, yes, an inlet. This does not mean that they were swimming in the inlet. Rip currents occur on beaches and can have devastating results: http://www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov/
You shouldn't assume. Look at a map, educate yourself. As Jimmy says, without geography we are nowhere.

I saw them on the news. They were swimming on the beach, after hours of guards I believe, and were swept out 8 miles. Then they drifted a mile apart. The son has autism also. I would bet that their family members were planning funeral arrangements after 12 hours passed and they weren't found.

Ummmm .... that's why I said in my first post that I didn't like that the story doesn't tell us HOW/WHY they were in the water and subsequently carried out to sea. That was a detail that I felt was missing from the story.

I've been surfing for 35+ years and I'm somewhat familiar with rip currents ... but thank you for your concern about my level of knowledge and my personal ability to discern whether or not I need to educate myself further.

Thank you. Swimming on the beach.* After hours, etc. Info missing from the print story.

* at the risk of being told I need to educate myself, I'll "assume" we mean in the waters just off the beach

I apologize I found more about it for you:
Walter, Christopher and Angela were enjoying a family day at the beach at the Ponce Inlet south of Daytona Sept. 6. Late in the afternoon, Christopher was swimming near his father when he got caught in a current, and his dad paddled rapidly to retrieve him.

“We were both just sucked out,” Marino told Lauer. “The forces just took us out so quickly, it totally took me by surprise.”
How did it happen: By swimming in the ocean shoreline where rip currents can happen.
Why did it happen: Because they were having a picnic at the beach and swimming is what most people do at the beach. Plus the fact that this guy didn't have the sense to swim parallel to the shore to get out of a rip current.

Sorry I didn't present this with the original post.

Wow! How remarkable that they both made it. :D I assume that the fellow didn't try to get out of the rip current because he wanted to stay with his son...whom he couldn't communicate with regarding swimming parrallel....It's hard to know what happened....but however it happened it is a miracle that they both survived.

Thanks. Yep. Now that my kids are old enough to start venturing further out in the water at the beach, that's the second rule I taught them. The first rule is don't panic.

That is so true. I cannot judge without being in his place. I am sure his #1 priority was his son. I'm just glad both are OK.
