I was airborn on an American Airlines flight from the DC area when they grounded all of the flights. I had missed my flight on September 10th (last one out) and took the first flight out, about 6:00am on September 11th. We left about 90 minutes before AA flight 77 left that hit the Pentagon. Fortunately when they grounded my flight it was in Dallas where I was headed anyway, so I already had hotel and car rental waiting for me. A lot of people were stuck without either.
If you've ever been near DFW airport, you can look up at any given time of day and count at least a dozen airplanes. It was eerie for 3 days with the skies so empty.
I spent the rest of the day trying to reach my wife to tell her my flight was fine. Phone lines were jammed.
When they reopened air travel at 3:00pm on Thursday, I already had a flight back to D.C. We were one of the first flights out. I was interviewed by CNN and maybe a half dozen other news agencies while waiting in those long security lines that first day. Every news reporter asked me the same question. "How safe do you feel about flying?". I looked around and everywhere you looked were military police with rifles and bomb sniffing dogs. My answer was always the same. "This has got to be the safest day to travel ever".
For frequent travelers, it's now an inconvenience to fly ... but the security measures are an unfortunate necessity. The world has forever changed. "War" is different now. No more easily defined battlegrounds, borders and identifiable uniformed enemies. There are no rules.

I worked in Dallas just about 1/2 mile from Love Field. It was strange not seeing the jets taking off later that morning. Sad day - I will never forget.

I will never forget!
I was in San Jose CA, on bussiness, I love to travel but that was the only time I remember really wanting to GO HOME. We flew out as soon as they would let us, we were moved around the terminal to 5 different planes and actually even boarded two and had to get off. It was a long trip home. But all the people standed or taking buses, etc had it even worse. My boss had decided if we did not get a flight out we were getting a car and heading for Texas.
Prayer to all the familes that were directly effected by that tragic day.

That day is one I'm sure none of us will forget.
I remember how beautiful a day it was here. We had tons of balloonists in town for a balloon festival. We work it pretty much every year. Often the weather is too bad for the balloons to fly. That year was perfect....but no balloons could fly because of the grounding of all aircraft.
I always remember when I joined BN....because it was right before 9/11. Until joining here, I didn't know anyone "out east" But I had a lot of new friends to worry about that day.
Much sympathy to all those who suffered personal losses that day....

This statue was supposed to go to Missouri but was in transit from Italy to Missouri and it was in New York City on September 11th, so instead of heading to Missouri, the firefighters of Missouri and the makers of the statue donated to the city of New York.

I was living in New Jersey and unemployed. I had just gotten a job in New York City in the World Financial Center on Liberty Street (which is within a block or so from the World Trade Center site). I was going to call HR of my company to figure out some details, etc. I decided to go to the gym first before I called them, when I got to the parking lot of the gym, I was about to turn off the car but just before I did, the dj on Q104.3 came on, not knowing what to say, said that if you have any business at the World Trade Center or know someone who works there, to go to a TV right then. I found it odd that he said that and when I got inside, I saw on the TV the first tower burning I thought it was big (not knowing it was a 747 that hit it) and then I saw the second tower hit, I knew it was a terrorist attack. I then went to the payphone (since I left my cell phone at home) to call my mom to tell her I was at the gym. When I left, I had to take I-287 to go home and I-287 in Morris and Somerset Counties are very busy still at around 9 AM but it was just myself, a tractor trailer, and two other cars going southbound at least 80 MPH. That's when I heard the first tower falling (while listening to WCBS). When I got home, my cousin from India called and told me that my parents should call my grandmother who has only been to the US once and was balling her eyes out because she thought my sister died in the WTC attack because my sister, at the time, lived in NYC and thought it was her building that got hit. I told my cousin that my sister is alright but will get more info (this is before talking with my sis -- I guess it was the sibling connection that made me know that she was ok).

I happened to be just outside the airport on the morning of 9/11. I had to go to the clinic for a company sponsored Hepatitis B shot. The place I was supposed to go had moved, so I stopped at the Mobil station just outside the Burlington International Airport, which also houses the Vermont Air National Guard. As I talked on the phone to an admin. assistant to find out where i was supposed to go, all of a sudden there was this loud WHOOOOOSH. The woman on the other end asked me "What the he11 was that?" to which I replied "Those damb fly boys from the National Guard are taking off on full afterburner". A total of 4 planes took off as I tried to get the information I needed. I soon got the directions I needed and headed to the clinic. When I got there, the receptionist was sobbing. When I asked her if she was OK, she replied " We're at war!!!...they are attacking NYC". I was stunned, but then thought back to the National Guard taking off.
We learned later that evening that the VT National Guard was deemed the closest to NYC at the time, and scrambled to intercept the 2nd plane. They were 75 miles, less than a minute away when the second plane hit. Every time I hear those jets take off, I think of that day, cringe at the fact I cursed them that day, and know I'll never be able to forget the day of 9/11.

Today is only the second time since 2002 I didn't go downtown on September 11, the other time was 2004. That year I was up in Boston, it was the weekend Buffett played Fenway Park.

It's a beautiful statue.
The Fire Fighters Association of Missouri completed their
Memorial near Kingdom City, it was dedicated in May 2002. If you are ever driving through central Missouri on I-70, be sure to stop.
Forget? Never.

Didn't realize (more likely didn't remember) that they got a statue a year later than they would have.
