texting

Post by Skibo »

I'm quite the dolt when it comes to this cell phone texting thing. So bad I don't even know how to set one up. So...instead, can I message a cell phone with my e-mail if I know the #? I don't even know if I have texting service on my plan.

Yes, you can. For my Sprint phone, this is how I do it, but I'm sure it's a little different for other carriers.
If the recipient is a Sprint customer, in the To field, enter his or her 10-digit phone number followed by @messaging.sprintpcs.com. For example, enter 7035551234@messaging.sprintpcs.com.
I can also go go Sprint.com and type in a message there, and just enter the phone number of the person that should receive the message.

Oh so I need to know the carrier? Maybe calling would be easier.

you probably do have texting available on your phone. it's very rarely blocked unless you intentionally do so. you probably have to pay about 15 cents or so for a text if you don't have texting as part of your calling plan. the service itself should work though.

all/most carriers have an email extention for texting as well. for Qwest it is phonenumber@qwestmp.com

You can use fonefinder.net to get the carrier for a specific number, then send the message. Here's some other carrier-specific addresses...

Carrier Send Email to phonenumber@....
Alltel @message.alltel.com
AT&T @mms.att.net
Nextel @messaging.nextel.com
Sprint @messaging.sprintpcs.com
SunCom @tms.suncom.com
T-mobile @tmomail.net
VoiceStream @voicestream.net
Verizon @vtext.com
Centennial @cwemail.com

SunCom and T-mobile have merged. So, they are both T-mobile now, but that is a big mess at the moment. If you are trying to text a former SunCom customer, I don't know which one you would use. [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif]

If you have an aol instant messenger account, you can use that to send texts. And if you don't, it's free to set one up.

Your address is correct. I just copied those from another page, but maybe the other one works too, I don't know.

I use yahoo messenger when sending texts from the computer. No need to know the carrier and the recipient can reply to those, unlike most of the providers' online texting services.
