Her name was Nona

She was one of my favorite bartenders for a very long time, until the bar was closed down by a city that didn't want any bars on Main street anymore.

She was a real nice lady who made the best split pea soup I ever tasted. She always had a smile for me and made me feel at home when ever I stopped by.

I received a call just a few min ago to inform me that she had been found dead this morning of a probable heart attack.

I sat down and thought about her for a little bit and remembered the soups, the smiles, the laughs and all of a sudden I was crying like a baby. I guess I never realized what an important part of my life she held for a time. A time when I was just existing and not really living.

My life of course changed when I met Connie and many of you here at Buffettnews and I hadn't seen Nona for a very long time. Nona was after all not really a friend just an old bartender buddy that I used to pass time with.

So why do I feel like I have just been kicked in the guts?

I think maybe she was more then just a bartender after all but a very good friend indeed.

Sail on Nona.

I understand.

And I think she must have done good to have left you with happy memories of her and her soups, etc.

She was much more than just a bartender. She was a human being who gave you warmth when you cold, support when you were weak, and a smile when you were sad. The people who pass through our lives in tangental ways leave a deeper impression on us than we sometimes notice at the time.

I'm sorry for your loss Don. Take comfort in the fact that she was part of your life and that she is at peace now.

If there is any way you can express those feelings to her family, do it. When my Dad passed away, some of the best feelings I received was not necessarily from his closest longtime friends and coworkers, but from a few people that went a bit out of their way to let me know how he would be missed.

The Saturday after my Dad's death, I filled his spot on his regular golf foursome with 3 of his friends. I expected them to tell me stories, etc., but I also heard comments from the guy in the proshop who said he and my Dad had a regular joke of some sort every Saturday that they would exchange. "Real nice bloke. Real nice. I'll miss 'im", he said.

I'll bet her family would love to hear just what you posted up above, if there is any way you can convey that information.

Thank you my friends for all the nice words. I fully intend to let her family know of my feelings. Her sister is another of my friends and I do see her every now and then. I intend to print out this thread and take it with me to the memorial (when ever that is) and share it with her family.

I have done this in the past (remember my "Other Mother" and her grandson who just barely made it to her bedside before her passing?

I shared the phin power thread where you all helped make it possible for her to hang on til he got there with the family and believe me it made a difference to them all.

Thanks again. I love you all.
