I just got an email from a company that rents college textbooks.

I went to their site and the prices are much cheaper than a used book, even when they sell it back.

Has any college student out their renting their textbooks or do any of you parents of college aged students out there know if your keets do this?

I want to offer it to my students only if it works.

one question I have is how much would they charge should the student decide they would like to keep the textbook

also are there any restrictions to highlighting the book?

Never done it, but it sounds like a great idea.

I'm surprised that this is available considering the number of edition changes in the college textbook world. Guess you would need to check for correct edition. I remember my physics professor putting out a new edition every three years to keep the sales up.

the book i use in class is up there. they can rent it for half the cost of buying it

I think it might be a good idea - but to be sure to check the ISBN numbers to make sure they're getting the correct edition

I would absolutely do something like this. However, if you can get your textbook info early and it's not a brand new edition you can find it to buy even cheaper on amazon and ebay and some other used textbook sites. I try to have all of my kids buy their books early and used. Then they list them for sale on those same sites which pay more then the school. I hate school book stores and their ridiculous prices. The book stores actually make the professors list the newest editions even if there is little difference and the prof doesn't care. There have been times when i've bought the new edition only to get to class and be told the prof doesn't care or to have them never even use the book.

Great idea. When I went to school the options were buying it new from the bookstore or, if you were lucky, buying it used from the bookstore.

The renting does seem like a good idea for some. Personally I loved the smell of a new textbook that didn't have highlighting marks. Besides do the used book and rental book places assure that those books were not in the bathroom? I liked keeping my core subject books for future reference.
