Why do people rat themselves out

I have been involved with several different chat boards over the last several years so my sense of things is not that of someone new this style of communicating but rather someone with some experience. In that experience I have always found it odd how much some folks divulge about themselves. I guess it is okay but I could never imagine broadcasting on a chat board anything but the most superficial of information. Soooooooooo,

why do some folks divulge such highly personal information about themselves with the consequence of losing control of such sensitive information? honestly, I just don't get it.

Are we talking about giving out credit card numbers and addresess or just admitting that you like to run around the yard with your underwear on your head?

Could be but it can also be a way to reach out to those that may be going thru something similar, maybe in a way of letting others know they're not alone and you're there to help? Or maybe an attention getting ploy.

Really Bumper - like Moonie said, you maybe need to be more specific because for every different thing I can think of I can also think of reasons to not divulge as well as reasons to divulge. So could you give some examples?

my rolling eyes are for the latter........some people seem to post crap about every little thing that is wrong in their life...from a hang nail and up in an attention whore way....

for the people who truly are reaching out and need help i am all about being there for them if i can help in any way!

The very nature of all things Buffett would seem to suggest a community of casualness, and an easy-going vibe.
For those who hang around here, and don't or can't cut loose a little... it strikes me as a contradiction of Buffett values.

...and they're welcome to remain as lurkers...

I've seen people like that - in those cases I think they're just wanting to be a center of attention; it doesn't matter what kind - negative attention is better than none

now he's got me pondering...
WHY do I post so much on my blog?? Am I really just seeking attention...I've always looked it as my journal...getting my thoughts down in the written form so I can examine myself and my behavior...but WHY exactly have I chosen to do it in a public format...

I'm I really that needy? Do I need that affirmation from others?

That is until their crys for help seem to be like someone crying wolf. You can only help someone that won't help themselves so far then you have to distance yourself because they are doing nothing but playing a game

tempted to hijack my own thread, would that be bad of me?

With some sincerity, the personal topics grabbing my attention are sometimes nonsensical and not relevant info to sensitive and what I consider highly personal information, the kind I probably rather not know about you. You drink to much, you take anti psychotic meds, you self medicate instead of taking anti psychotic meds, you have an Axis I or worse yet, an Axis II diagnosis, those having one of those know exactly what I mean, you have an organic brain disorder. That help?
