Yeah, that must be the problem in this country. It's all those horrible, dreadful public school teachers.

Years ago, YES, agree 100%.
But these days, the public education system, ESPECIALLY the colleges and universities, are nothing more than liberal & socilaist indoctrination centers.
Being run by the phoney-baloney, plastic banana, dope smoking, maggot infested socialist rejects from my era-the 1960's.
Thank God I had the good sense to avoid those America-hating bafoons.
If you want to fix education, as with most over government, get the politicians out of the operations.
Now THAT I will agree with you
1000%.
They should be making the decisions on direction and funding not day to day operations.
Yes.
With state vouchers, and let the STATES run their own education systems.
Then, maybe the politicians can do something REALLY nice for the country.
Like taking a one-way trip to Outer Mongolia.

Not ALL.
Laura Bush was a public school teacher.
It's SOME of the public school teachers, and nearly ALL of the college/university "professors."

No fair naming Texas schools.
The playing field is stacked WAY too much in their favor.

Now come on. That is a generalization. Most school teachers are hard working people that care about kids and their development. You would rant against someone on here that made that generalization about law enforcement.

I can't argue that.
I do get upset over what they're actually TEACHING the kids, however.
But I'd never say they don't CARE for their students.
Unless one of them happens to think like I do, anyway.

Several years ago I probably WOULD'VE ranted big time.
These days I'm not so sure.

Mr. Mojito is a teacher ... at the same school for 20 years ... had his share of National Merit Scholars, Air Force Academy Graduates, Law School Review Editors, and several State Spelling and Vocabulary Team and Individual championships ... most of his colleagues are committed to their students and spend countless hours after school helping their kids. The kids come back while in college and praise their "small school" education, giving credit to him and the others who taught them for 12 years.
No Child Left Behind has forced them to "teach to the test," but he and his colleagues really do their best to make sure learning is going on in their classrooms.
I pray that whoever is the new president takes a long, hard look at what NCLB has done to dismantle the classroom and disrupt the entire educational system.

Laura Bush was a librarian.
My mother was a public school teacher for 30 years. She worked with kids who were learning disabled and also had problems outside of school (ie broken homes, poverty, etc).

My sister is a teacher as well and says similar things. But there were kids leaving high schools with a diploma who could not read, write or do simple math. Not every kid, nor every school. The states could not or would not do anything. The teachers union also refused to do anything, refused to fire ineffective teachers. I agree NCLB is draconian in it's measurements, but something had to be done. Maybe it will serve as a spur to everyone in education to retrain or remove ineffective teachers and insure that public education is not simply daycare for school age kids.

Seriously, Garry? What good teachers at good schools are teaching is critical thinking. I know you work in a university town, but spend some time on a variety of campuses and dealing with a variety of colleges (even that left wing alma mater of mine just down the road from you) as I do, and you will see incredible research, thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking at most of them.

I agree with you ... but NCLB - as it stands now - requires that ALL children are at grade level ... including those with severe learning deficits like mental retardation and cognitive development issues ... my husband's not against mainstreaming, but there needs to be a cut-off point. It's hard to teach when the IQs of your students have such a dramatic range.
At one time, I covered the school board for the paper. They struggled with this issue and agonized over how to make sure everyone had a quality education.
It is a puzzlement.

Obama has the lead....Big deal!!! I will be voting for Obama. I think that most people are afraid of a "black" in the white house...
Years ago, LA had a black aganst a white for Mayor. Bradly I think..Most pools showed the the white candatate would lose. Well Bradly lost and lost big. I also think that most people are racist to some extent. While people won't admit it we if not all of us are afraid of the uncertain. With Mc Cain, good or bad he is white. I think that that is really sad.

This mud has been thrown before, and it just doesn't stick...
Then why is Obama trying to distance himself from Ayers?
CNN wrote:Obama confirmed during that April debate that he knew Ayers "as a guy who lives in my neighborhood."
He started his political fundraising in the man's home.
CNN wrote:In 1995, months after the little-known Obama became Annenberg chairman, state Sen. Alice Palmer introduced the young lawyer as her political heir apparent. The introduction was made over coffee at the home of Ayers and Dohrn. Two people who attended the event told CNN the introduction of Obama included a solicitation for campaign funds.

As opposed to all of those nice Catholic private schools? Tell me, with a straight face, that there is no "indoctrination" going on there.
With all due respect, how much of what you claim is material that you've researched independently after hearing Rush and Sean tell you about it? I'm hearing generalizations and namecalling; I'm not seeing independently-verified facts. "I saw it on FOX news" doesn't count.
Whatever happened to the relatively civil discussion on this thread five or six pages ago? People were disagreeing, but they weren't calling each other names and cutting each other down personally.
How about we all take a minute to close our eyes, take a deep breath, and dream about that warm sunny beach and that cold fruity rum drink, and start over? Is that too much to ask?

So that makes it ok?
Not in my book.
I still remember the names of the Marines that I buried in 1983. Senator "I have a bracelet too" Obama can't even remember the name of the soldier on the bracelet on his wrist.
Blowing up government buildings is a not a protest or a political statement. It's murder. If Ayers didn't kill anybody, it was not because he wasn't trying.
