I'm not an accountant or a tax attorney but to the best of my knowledge there's nothing in the internal revenue code that prevents you from paying more tax than you owe. If Warren Buffett and other rich people really feel their tax rate is too low they can have their accountants write a check to the Treasury Department. I wonder if any of them do?The Lost Manatee wrote:Warren Buffett maintains that there is something wrong with our tax system when his taxes work out to be 17% of his income and his office admin is paying 39% of her income. According to him, he has the lowest rate in his office of over 100 people with the vast majority paying in excess of 30%.

President Bush said that about the Democrats at his last State of the Union Address-that if they felt they were under-taxed, they should feel free to send more of their money to the treasury.LIPH wrote:I'm not an accountant or a tax attorney but to the best of my knowledge there's nothing in the internal revenue code that prevents you from paying more tax than you owe. Just like our illustrious Congress did today....spending about 1 trillion of OUR money...700 billion for the bailout and a couple of hundred billion of pork to bribe Congressmen to vote FOR the plan..Wino you know wrote: How easy it is to spend SOMEONE ELSE'S money.![]()

That's why those bafoons voted against it the other day-there was no pork involved for THEIR little pet projects. But when it's added, they jump right on the band wagon of spending OUR money.
I don't know what p*sses me off more-the fact that they actually passed it, or the fact that damn near all of them will be re-elected by their clueless constituents.

But when you listen to people p*ss & moan about what a bunch of dweebs the dweebs in congress are (as evidenced by their 9% approval rating) and THEN turn right around and re-elect those C.S.ers, it makes you want to bash their hollow heads together.
"CONGRESS S--KS, BUT MY GUY/GAL IS OKAY."
Talk about a bunch of elitist S.O.B.s
And did you ever wonder just WHO the hell these 9% clowns are who DO approve the job congress is doing?
I wonder if they're even LEGAL citizens.
None of us should vote, this way we can blame the people who did. After all, no matter who wins, there will be complaints in 3 years.
I watched 60 percent of the debate, not enough mention of science nor R&D. Remember when the USA was good at R&D? So, I changed the channel to "House". I like his attitude.

I really think that only those who vote should have a right to complain. If you want to keep your mouth shut on election day, you should be keeping your mouth shut for the next 4 years.moog wrote:None of us should vote, this way we can blame the people who did. One of our senators (Bernie Sanders) actually DID do what he was asked to by a flood of emails, he voted no both times. Our congressman voted no the first time but lost his nerve the second time out. The other senator never found his balls in the first place, although GENERALLY all three of them vote the way their constituency thinks, which is why they keep getting re-elected.Wino you know wrote:Absolutely.diverg wrote:Gary, unfortunately its business as usual in Washington D.C.

Every political type discussion I see around here seems to be about equally divided between the "tastes great" and the "less filling" groups. I seem to recall a poll (maybe a couple years ago) about political affiliation and, although my memory may be faulty, I thought it turned out that Rebublicans actually outnumbered Democrats here. But then again what do I know ..... I'm an independent and I'm not out looking for vast right-wing or left-wing conspiracies. I just try to vote based on common sense and facts rather than misleading TV ads, internet propaganda or whether the candidate has an "R" or a "D" after their name.

Dear Friends,
The next few months are going to be politically intriguing ones for us all. It is natural that we will all have our opinions and wish to express them. During all of this, the mods hope to keep this board civil and friendly. So please know that we will not be tolerating anything but civil behavior. Any post with name calling, the use of profanity (even if it is typed using symbols), or post where it is perceived that the person is "yelling" (using all caps has long been known to portray "yelling or shouting" on the internet), will be subject to deleting. Let 's play nice and enjoy what makes our country unique and special - the ability to debate freely, and the ability to take part in the voting process.
Thank you
The mods....
I meant to mention this, too. Why the heck was the title of this thread allowed to remain as-is? Or is the name calling prohibition related only to other posters and not to the candidates themselves?
But then, what should I expect when alleged political discourse in this country is more aimed at demeaning or degrading your opponent than actually discussing the issues.

Probably not. I know a couple of people who own businesses and say they are liberal leaning and that everyone has to pay their fair share on income taxes. Where do they set up their business? Yep, in TAX FREE New Hampshire. If they were so concerned that people should pay their fair share, they would have either worked to change the laws of New Hampshire to get an income tax or move to a state that has one and pay their fair share.LIPH wrote:I'm not an accountant or a tax attorney but to the best of my knowledge there's nothing in the internal revenue code that prevents you from paying more tax than you owe. That's why I don't trust polls until the one that counts. You can word any question for polls to get the answer you want.FunkHouse9 wrote:It's sad that even the most unbiased sources are still biased. From what I've seen, it looks as though McCain has misrepresented factcheck.org when using it to support his campaign.

I watched a few seconds here and there, but I can't stand listening to these politicians blow their hot air at us, actually believing what they say, when we all know its the same crap every four years. They p*** down our backs and try to tell us it's raining. I still think that the tax rate should change to be 17 % for everyone. Before anyone starts complaining that that won't be fair. Think of it this way: A person making $1 million dollars will pay $170,000 in taxes. A person making $50,000 will pay $8,500. The richer person will still pay more in taxes than the poorer person. Oh, plus get rid of all deductions. You pay the taxes on the gross amount of your pay.
