The garden lining the front walkway will be chard and nasturtium next summer (just nasturtiums now). I remember gathering watercress and morels in the woods when I was a kid.Desdamona wrote:I wanted to try day lily buds, but I would have missed the pretty flowersOceanCityGirl wrote:I had a hippy mother who went through a wild food phase. I have had queen anne's lace which was supposed to be like carrots, milk weed I think, and wild tiger lilies - both buds and flowers among other things. My poor kids have been denied the wild food experience. If I had ever tried to feed them kale they'd revolt for sure.I tried cooking briar shoots a couple of times. A field guide book I had said
they would be like asparagus. They weren't... but I just had to try, right?
and have been disappointed if they hadn't tasted good. We have had wild
sorrel added to salads a few times. It's pretty good. And alfalfa sprouts
instead of lettuce on sandwiches. (I'm probably your mom's age, after all.)
BTW, bear jerky and fried moray are both pretty good.
I ate kale

Day lily buds taste like wax beans. And growing up we also had goats and only had goat milk, goat cheese and a couple bad experiences with goat milk ice cream. I was not fond of any of the above. We raised our own chickens for eggs and when they got older they were stew, had ducks and geese which we used the eggs for baking. My siblings and I all revolted by wanting modern conveniences and food from the store. Today we are all borderline vegetarians though who work hard to avoid pesticides, kind of ironic.

Re: I ate kale
My family was part of a farm collective this summer and we got fresh vegatables and fruit every week. I think we got kale every week for 6 weeks straight. We found some okay receipes for the first few weeks but after the 3rd week or so, we just threw it away. My kids (age 5 & 7) would even say "Oh no, not kale again!" The cycle was repeated in Aug/Sept with swiss charred.
Twenty degrees and the hockey games on...
