I used to be allergic to chocolate when I was a kid...that was the worst!! Halloween and Easter were NOT my favorite holidays. Fortunately I outgrew it, but the funny thing is I'm not that crazy about chocolate as an adult. And I'm allergic to Sulfa drugs too
Dont try to explain it, just bow your head

Allergic to all shellfish.
No lobster.
No crabs (keep your comments to yourself)
No clams
No mussels
No squid
No shrimp
Was at a picnic once at my wife's boss' house and was eating the macaroni salad and starting feeling my throat tighten. Asked our hostess if anything had shellfish and sure enough, tiny shrimp in the macaroni salad. Luckily, if I catch it early enough, a Benadryl does the trick and I now always keep them in the car, at home and in my briefcase.

My best friend, Angie, is alive because of an allergy. (Sounds odd, I know) Her mother had 2 sons. Michael was 3 and David was 10 months old when Michael got sick. Typical little boy runny nose, head crud. After a trip to the hospital and a shot of Penicillin, they went home. Michael fell asleep and never woke up. He had anaphalaxis and sufficated in his sleep. After 4 more years, Carol had gotten to the point to have another baby. Angela Michelle (named for Michael's Angel) is 13 months older than me and my twin (from different parents!) Anyone knowing me, knows Ang. And...SHE HAS THE SAME ALLERGY AS MICHAEL! NO PCN and NO CEPH AT ALL! Doctor told her (with me standing there) there's only a 5% cross over with amoxil and keflex...she is in that 5%!
Carol, their mom has that severe shellfish allergy. If you boil shrimp and she's in the house, her throat tightens and her face swells.

When my older brother was a kid he underwent an allergy test to see what he was allergic to. He had a ton of needle pricks on his back with all the testing. He reacted to every one of them. The Doctors were dumbfounded until they realized he was allergic to the metal the needles were made of.

Re: Weird Allergies...
Let's see...jimolliemom wrote:So...what are YOU (or yours ) allergic to???
Wife: Tree nuts (walnuts, pine nuts, pecans) but not peanuts and almonds (since they are technically legumes/fruit). Penicillin, sulfa and arithromycin. Cats=bad. As an adult she developed an allergy to shellfish.
Kid 1: Peanuts and tree nuts and some medicine which I can't remember. Cats=bad. Has asthma.
Kid 2: Dairy allergic. We avoid peanuts/tree nuts as a precaution.
Kid 3: Unknown at this point.
Me: Season allergies. Bad beer (Landshark).
All of the allergies for the kids and wife will cause an anaphylactic reaction; restricting of the airway and hives.
Far be it for me to tell people what to do but here are a few life saving suggestions:
1. For anyone will allergies in your family, get them a medic alert bracelet. http://www.medicalert.org/home/Homegradient.aspx
2. Get an epipen for wherever you or you kid goes. We've got epipens at home, in the diaper bag, wife's purse and in a carrying kit if I take the kids out. Sounds like overkill but an epipen can save your life if you are in anaphylactic shock. Even if you are taking the kids out someplace where you don't plan on eating (The hardware store, the pet store, etc) kid pick things up off the ground, touch things etc. It's not just when you go to restaurants. You gotta be prepared.
3. Join FAAN. http://www.foodallergy.org/
Interesting stat I heard this AM, 90% of food allergies are caused by 8 foods: dairy, soy, nuts, gluten, egg, wheat, shellfish and one other I can't remember. Also, kids with allergies is on the rise. I don't buy the immunization argument but I do think there is some credence in the processed food argument.
Yeah, eating out sucks, which is why we don't do it that often. But, on the plus side, the kids don't eat much junk food since they are allergic to alot of it. Halloween sort of sucks but we trade with the kids - we will give you this candy for that one. It works out well for me.

Hmmmm. Last few times I've used band-aids the skin underneath was really raw when I took them off. I just assumed I was pulling skin when I ripped of the bandage, but there were blisters as well...I wonder...jimolliemom wrote:See, I forgot about adhesive. I am allergic to that too. Mollie's teacher called the other day and asked "What happens when she is around play-doh?"...I answered..."She's can't breathe!...nuff'said!

My dad was hospitalized many, many years ago (about 40) and placed in traction for his back-at the time, this involved taping his legs with adhesive tape. THe blisters were so severe on one of his legs, they came close to amputatingfabduo wrote:allergic to tape -bandaids, surgical tape

I was last tested on 32 things-had strong reactions to 31 of them
I get weekly shots which I will probably be on the rest of my life.
Other known allergies--coconut, mold-blue cheese.

Could be the preservative they use when freezing them.Frank4 wrote:I am not allergic to anything either. I am debating about getting tested, because store bought frozen shrimp has been causing me to break out in hives. Weird.
But then again, most shrimp you get has been frozen and then defrosted at the store.

Yeah, I'm probably preachin' to the quire on this one. You wouldn't believe how many people we've run into that don't carry that stuff. It's just asking for trouble...jimolliemom wrote:Mollie's teacher called the other day and asked "What happens when she is around play-doh?"...I answered..."She's can't breathe!...nuff'said!

I have the usual batch of environmental allergies that all appeared when I was in my mid 20's, and I should get shots but they are not covered very well by my insurance and I don't like shots anyway, but I have one allergy that annoys me:
OYSTERS.
Not regular clams, not any other shellfish, just oysters. Kinda strange. And I like oysters too. Oh well. We were just in New Orleans and I was sad to miss out on all the fun oyster bar yummies.

We have Epi-pens at our house and even for the grandparents for when they have him. As well as in the clinic at his school. The doc suggested bracelets but we have not gotten them.....yet. Before he was dianosed and we got the epi-pen, benadryl worked fine for the two times he had a small reaction (snickers and a nutty buddy). It's scary. The doc said a peanut reaction might not affect you much one time and the next time it could kill you. I dread the day "if" I have to use the pen.Hockey Mon wrote:Yeah, I'm probably preachin' to the quire on this one. You wouldn't believe how many people we've run into that don't carry that stuff. Actually many people are allergic to either mollusks or crustaceans and some are allergic to both, but only oysters? That's a new one on me. I'd be careful around the others as well.OttoCal wrote:I have the usual batch of environmental allergies that all appeared when I was in my mid 20's, and I should get shots but they are not covered very well by my insurance and I don't like shots anyway, but I have one allergy that annoys me:

I have eaten clams both raw and steamed since I was a little kid and it's only oysters that get me. Hope it doesn't change
and I get more of your typical food poisoning reaction
