There IS no Democrat version of Ann Coulter. She is unique in her particular brand of paranoid hate-mongering.
Michael Moore, on the other hand, makes a lot of sense.

What I did like from Maher's show last night was that most other Western Democracies either vote on the weekend or election day is designated as a national holiday. Why don't we do that?

still doesn't make it convenient for all voters,...a national holiday does not necessarily mean that everyone has the day off, same with w/e...

Re: convenience of voting-
Virginia's State Board of Elections (and I'm guessing other states have similar provisions) allows for absentee voting if your work plus commute time equals more than eleven of the thirteen hours that the polls are open.
Expecting historic turnouts, you can register in person (and vote absentee) up to and including TODAY and the registar's office in the district where you vote. I don't see how it can be much more convenient than that, other than the early voting that some states have.
And we won't even MENTION a certain crazy ex governor of Virginia who says the polls should be open longer in "certain" districts.
My love is staying an anchor tied to you with that silver chain.

Sorry, I have never been stoned or drunk enough for Michael Moore to make sense. Then again, he's on the list of people I try to avoid listening to like Rush, Al Franken, Maher, Jon Stewart, Michael Savage, G Gordon Liddy, Hannity, Olberman so I don't even try anymore

I understand that it doesn't make it convenient for ALL voters. But it would make it more convenient.
How could it possibly BE any MORE convenient? The polls are open for 13 hours. If you have a limitation due to work or physical handicap, there are provisions in all states. Virginia even has CURBSIDE voting for the elderly who cannot easily stand for long periods of time. A registrar actually brings the ballots to their CAR and they never even have to get out of the car.

Some states try to make it convenient by permitting early voting.
32 states allow no-excuse pre-lection day in person voting.
Most states allow absentee ballots or early in person voting with an excuse.
Texas even offers "drive up" voting for the disabled, both early and on election day.
Changing election day to a weekend day would take a simple law passed by Congress.
The Tuesday tradition goes back to our country's early agrarian roots. Given the era, Sunday voting was out of the question, so voters were given Monday and Tuesday to arrange travel to the (sometimes distant) polling place.

more convenient for who/whom?
some precinct workers are paid, some are volunteers, but do you think that any of them would want to work the w/e?
I was a precinct worker for several years, in OK, and it's a looooong day from 7am to 7pm.
do you know what it would cost employers to add, yet, another day to pay workers for non-production?
I voted last Monday and the wait was only about 20 mins...

Despite his everyman sensibilities, you'll notice Michael Moore has stayed very far from the limelight
in this election cycle, right? There's been no Farenheit 9/11 for him to schlep, and he knows, like Ann Coulter, that he's a polarizing figure.

Michael Moore is correct. That is, in fact, exactly how Canada votes. It clearly works well for them.

Oh, I didn't say it was not correct, or question it..however,
he also said that within 2 hrs. of the polls closing, the winner was chosen and announced.

Also accurate. The Canadians just had a federal election and the result was known within hours of the polls closing.
But this may be due more to the mechanics of how Canadian democracy works as opposed to Canadians counting faster or being better at math (although these may be true, too).
Canadians don't vote directly for their Prime Minister (other than those who live in the local district where the party leader is running). They vote for candidates in their local district or riding. The party which wins the most of these ridings gets to form the government (normally) and the leader of this party gets to be Prime Minister.
There may be a close race in an individual riding which results in a recount, but the broader result is known very soon after polls close.
I think the Canadian system also isn't burdened with all the other positions which get voted on, not to mention all the amendments and propositions. I think this complicates and slows down our system.
You should put more faith in the things that Michael Moore says. He is a very smart man.
Crazy Navy Flyer wrote:Don't forget, the American Flag was removed also.
Shame on you, sir. I can't believe that you aren't aware of the facts behind this ridiculous charge.
The American flag on the tail of Barack Obama's previous campaign plane (a chartered aircraft) is part of the corporate logo of the the company that owns the plane - North American Airlines.
When the Obama campaign switched aircraft to their current one, they placed a campaign logo on the tail. The American flag is included on the fuselage.
Although it has been pointed out by the 'thread police' that this thread is about Obama and not McCain, I should point out that McCain's campaign plane does not (I repeat - DOES NOT) have an American flag on the tail, either. McCain's aircraft has the flag on the fuselage.
Does your rumor mongering benefit anyone at this point?
Rumor mongering?? WTF? Where did that come from? I merely pointed out the American Flag was removed from the plane. Was that a rumor? I know the small flag is still there next to the N number but the large flag WAS removed.
