"God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."
Bought season 1 of "WKRP in Cincinnati" on DVD today ($14.97 at Wally World).
Just a damned funny show, one of the most underrated series of all time, I think. It didn't last too long, but at its best it was great. I wish sitcoms today had the originality and wacky writing that made WKRP an off beat classic.
"Oh, the humanity!!"
(Got season 7 of "Magnum, P.I." for the same price, btw.)

As an aside, DVD release of "WKRP" was delayed for years because of music licensing issues. The show used a lot of snippets of popular songs, and those licenses ran out after about ten years. The DVD release has generic music dubbed in (such as when Dr. Johnny Fever played "The Long Run" by the Eagles, for instance).

WKRP and the film it was loosely based on, FM, was the reason I got into radio.bestseller92 wrote:As an aside, DVD release of "WKRP" was delayed for years because of music licensing issues. I don't know if people who aren't in radio realize it or not, but WKRP was dead on accurate. It was a little exaggerated but, overall, it was right on the money, as was FM.

I heard a story that the writers send out feelers for ideas to radio stations throughout the country and then the radio stations that send back ideas had their bumper stickers put on the wall in Andy's office....mikemck wrote:WKRP and the film it was loosely based on, FM, was the reason I got into radio.bestseller92 wrote:As an aside, DVD release of "WKRP" was delayed for years because of music licensing issues. I think that the saddest part of the DVDs is that the original music has been replaced by Garage Band generated noise. Plus they have dubbed new lines into the show to replace some of the greatest lines because the lines were lyrics. The music was an important part of the music, like the scene where Les is getting ready to date and Hot Blooded is playing in the foreground. Or Elton John's Tiny Dance is used throughout one episode, with the Russian defector and Bailey Quarters.
I always loved the show and I've got a number of friends who work or have worked in the radio business and they all said that the show rang true to them.
The problem is that the licenses for the music which Viacom said was too much work to hunt down and renew. I find that this is probably a spurious argument since most of the license holders would LOVE to get more revenue from these songs. Anyone remember the movie Heavy Metal? The studio kept saying that it would never come out on video or dvd since it took too much effort to get all the license holders to agree to the release of the movie. One fan went out and contacted all the license holders and got them all to sign standard releases and that was all it took. If one could get a list of all the songs, it wouldn't take too long to track down the license holders via the net. After that one would expect that it wouldn't take much to get the releases.
I suspect that the real reasons are primarily that Viacom doesn't want to pay out any royalties and they don't believe that it really matters to the fans.

That's actually my favorite episode. "[spoken in thick Russian accent] Hold me closer...tiny dancer" has become a favorite joke in our house. The Lost Manatee wrote:The music was an important part of the music...Elton John's Tiny Dance is used throughout one episode, with the Russian defector and Bailey Quarters.
One of my favorite lines from the show is from that episode, when the sympathetic Russian official has to feign outrage for his comrades and points at Andy and Mr. Carlson and shouts, "...and worst of all, they keep black man locked in small glass box!"
There were only two things that didn't jibe with my experience. The first is that most sales people aren't as sleazy as Herb Tarlek (almost, but not quite) and the library is never as neat as it was on the show.I always loved the show and I've got a number of friends who work or have worked in the radio business and they all said that the show rang true to them.
I remember watching the show and thinking, "Wow! They actually put their records back after their shift! That's amazing!"

When I was a copy editor at a major newspaper in the early 80s, I worked with a copy editor (later he became a TV critic) who claimed to have written the WKRP episode in which Les draws his office on the floor in duct tape, or was it just imaginary lines?
Check the credits for me, please. His name was Tom Porter.
I Loved the show! My favorite part was Les opening and closing his imaginary door.

I had forgotten about that one....that was a great episode....pair8head wrote:Remember Carlson beating his foot with his shoe and shouting "I've got a monkey on my foot"
One of my favorite scenes in that whole series.
I remember one where a consultant was brought in to take a look at the station and everyone changed into the oppposite of themselves. Herb dressed in a matching suit, Carlson was over worked, Jennifer worked, Venus was shaking down Johnny for money. I am sitting here thinking about it and laughing. I only ever saw it once.
