Showing my ignorance:If light comes in "quanta"...

...does all other energy come in "quanta", too?

Einstein discovered/theorized that light, rather than just being a continuous wave, is actually composed of unspeakably tiny "packets" or "quanta" of light energy. This, of course, led to the quantun theory, and all the silly fun that's ensued from that.

My question, to those who know such things, is, if light comes in quanta, does all other energy (such as the heat that radiates from a woodstove, etc.) come in the form of quanta?

Yes, it's a silly question, but Hell, it's a silly day!

It's a figure of speech.

We had to listen to left wing dipsticks bash President Bush the last several years. Now, one day after the election, right wing dipsticks are already starting in on President-elect Obama. I was not an Obama supporter. I was not a McCain supporter. Whether we like the results or not we should be a President supporter, unless and until he proves he isn't up to the job.

That being said, this is the type of nonsense that ruined Church of Buffett before it got hacked into oblivion a couple of years ago. I was a moderator there and I stopped posting because of all the political BS. Sadly, over the last several months I've seen a lot of similarities here at Buffett News. It was a good run, have fun my friends. :(

edit: Interesting that not only was the post completely removed and changed, but the title of the thread was changed too. Way to have the courage of your convictions.

Dunno about that but I know that if I turn the knob one way the music gets louder and turning it the other way the music gets quieter. Can't help beyond that.

I don't know what the original thread title was and I don't know what the original question was, but with regard to the current question . . .

In a certain sense, the heat that radiates from a wood stove isn't any different than the light that radiates from the fire in the stove, ie. they both consist of electromagnetic wave packets which transfer energy from the stove to you. The heat is just further towards the infrared end of the EM spectrum than the visible light.

Einstein did, in fact, publish a paper on the photoelectric effect. This paper explained the photoelectric effect by theorizing that light energy could be modeled as discrete quanta or photons. The fact that the photoelectric effect was successfully explained by treating light as discrete packets of energy, as opposed to waves, led physicists to realize the dual nature of electromagnetic energy, ie. it can be described as BOTH a wave and a particle.

The original thread, and it's title, compared Obama's election to America committing suicide. But he didn't have the balls to leave it there.

Nah, that's Quantas and they are the only airline to not have a an accident. Or did they have one recently?

So, if you fly on Quantas, are you in one large continuous plane or is it actually a series of unspeakably tiny "quantas"?

You seem to be sorta p***.
Had nothing to do with the size of my testicles. I had taken it down because I agreed that this really isn't the place I wanted to discuss politics.

But since you insist:

America Died Today

She doesn't look much different
Merely sleeping, you might say
But she's garbed now in a burial shroud
For America died today

Not many mourners gather
Just a few by the graveside, stand
Staring, disbelieving
That she died by her own hand

Death wasn't quick or painless
Suicide was decades-long
And looking back we spot just when
Things started to go wrong

'T'was the drug of socialism
One we never thought she'd take
That made her forget her raising
And her values to forsake

The fumes she breathed inside her
And a cancer formed and grew
Unnoticed, undetected
Ever-spreading, through and through

She was sick and she was hurting
She was showing all the signs
But no one seemed to see or care
All her children had gone blind

They sucked at her like leeches
Take, take and never give
And in the end it seems that Liberty
Just lost the will to live

A few doctors tried to save her
Goldwater, Reagan, Paul
But she spat out their medicine
She'd ceased to care at all

And then finally came Obama
To her bedside, he leaned in close
He handed her more of the drug
And she took an overdose

So as you gaze upon her now
Clasp your hands and pray
For the ghost of Lady Liberty
For America died today.

Anyway, I have no wish to argue, either politics or anything else. Have no desire for acrimony. I originally wrote this (as I stated when I first posted it, in 15 minutes on a break at work) as a way to shed a little political frustration, and I posted it here because I've seen other partisan political posts. Do I consider it great poetry? No. If I did I'd sell it instead of posting it on a free internet message board.

The reason I changed it is because, by the time I decided it wasn't what I wanted to post here, there had already been replies to it, which meant I couldn't just delete it.

The problem with your assertion is that is based upon the premise that the ideals spoken of being championed by Reagan an the others are no longer alive. But they are. They will resurface in future elections championed by someone, hopefully, with Reagan's charisma and strength of character. This is not the death of America, just another step in her growth. Maybe in the right direction, maybe in the wrong (which I believe right now) but a step nonetheless.

If you're traveling faster than the speed of light and you flip a light switch ..... what happens?
