California's on fire....again!
Moderator: SMLCHNG
It’s a weird feeling to go outside and it looks like there is a light snow with the little flakes of ashes falling on the car.
They cancelled the Pasadena marathon on Sunday.
A friend of mine was supposed to meet me tonight, but he said he went to the valley today and is sick from breathing smoke.
It’s really something here. I am glad the firefighters are sticking together and other cities are coming to help out….

What's to learn? It's three chords - try it. *I* figured it out, years ago, before I had any *clue* about music theory. You'll have to listen a few times to write out all the lyrics, but that's about it. I'd offer to do up a lead sheet for you, but I'm deep in the midst of learning three other songs and writing two right now, when I'm not at the Day Job, etc.Salukulady wrote:I grew up with that album (still have it on vinyl). Trying to get a hold of the sheet music, so my band can learn it.TropicalTroubador wrote:Oh, man...thank you for that wonderful bit of nostalgia!Salukulady wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmsbNq_IylwSkibo wrote:Besides if there was a God, he would have pushed California into the pacific ocean long ago. ::ducking...TropicalTroubador wrote:Why are so many people willing to believe that brush fires are "God's way of punishing California," but pay no attention to the tornadoes that rip through places like Kansas (where they're still trying to outlaw teaching evolution) every year? Others are indicating that it is God's response, comparing California to Sodom and Gomorrah. I certainly hope that the fires weren't set and wish the focus could be on repairing the lives of those of have been so drastically shaken.
I could say "God's punishing California for voting *for* that smelly piece of Nazi-esque tripe," but what would that help?
I've lived in southern CA. I used to know people who lived in the mobile home park that was destroyed in the *last* round of fires a month or so ago, and I've hiked and spent time in places that are either burning now, or very near fire zones. I've been near big fires, and been worried about a couple of them possibly taking out the homes of friends and family, over the past thirty-some years. Personally, I don't think God plays favorites.
My thoughts and prayers are with *everyone* affected by this - the people losing their homes, the people who are evacuated wondering if they'll have homes to come back to, the firefighters and other emergency responders who are trying to save those homes and lives.
I also recall that Chevy b*stardized it for a set of commercials, many long years ago. One wonders if the ad agency paid any attention to what the original song really *said*.

But from what I am reading, am I correct that the fires are not near Pasadena? I have family in Pasadena and Monrovia and couldn't reach them last night, though that is not unusual.rich_big wrote:It’s a weird feeling to go outside and it looks like there is a light snow with the little flakes of ashes falling on the car.

Agreed, but there's one line I'm having trouble deciphering word wise. Also, I happen to find Tommy Reynolds on line (the guy who wrote it, remember Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds?) and I emailed him....thought it might be fun, IF I got a response.TropicalTroubador wrote:What's to learn? I sort of thing every region has something that the rest of us think we wouldn't want. My brother, who was raised in the Chicago area says that Californians think Chicagoans are nuts for living in an area with snow and bitter cold; I think they are nuts for dealing with earthquakes and fires.JustDucky wrote:I was watching the news of the fires the other day with a friend and we looked as each other and said Why would you want live there?
I dunno. Seems too common, those fires. I'd think anyone living there would want to move to where there are no fires like that.

Well, people in Louisiana have a bit of a chip on our shoulder considering all the ***** the was fired this way about 'why would you wanna live there' after Katrina - in a lot of times, the feeling of people saying that that love to come to New Orleans and act like it's a landfill and trash the place and behave like rabid monkeys. So when other disasters happen, people tend say that about where they live. It's mocking the idiots that don't give a damn about anyone else.

Ellen, the the fires were about 20 miles away, west to Sylmar as well as slightly southeast when they finally hit Diamond Bar. Sunday started out with just a hint of smoke, but within a few hours the air was filled with smoke and ash and that horrid orange gray glow. Suprisingly, it cleared out pretty fast by yesterday afternoon.ejr wrote:But from what I am reading, am I correct that the fires are not near Pasadena? Yeah...the smoke and ash can travel a *very* long way. Earlier this year, when we had all the bad fires in the Sierras a couple of hundred miles away, I got some very fine ash on my car.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Ellen, the the fires were about 20 miles away, west to Sylmar as well as slightly southeast when they finally hit Diamond Bar. About a week after Mt St Helen blew we had fine ash on our cars on the *east coast*....TropicalTroubador wrote:Yeah...the smoke and ash can travel a *very* long way. Earlier this year, when we had all the bad fires in the Sierras a couple of hundred miles away, I got some very fine ash on my car.

I can't remember how long we went with smoke filled air from those fires...I think it was 2 months if not more.TropicalTroubador wrote:Yeah...the smoke and ash can travel a *very* long way. It’s really something here. I am glad the firefighters are sticking together and other cities are coming to help out….I imagine it was pretty smoky over at your bro's place...as the crow flies he was quite a bit closer to the origin of the Sylmar fire, although most of that smoke was blowing west.
