Independence plans to fire teacher accused of drunken driving

Jim Hinson, Independence School District superintendent, has issued a “statement of charges” against the contract of a Blackburn Elementary teacher accused of drunken driving.

Once such a statement has been issued, the recipient has 10 calendar days to request a hearing before the Independence Board of Education, if he or she so chooses, district spokeswoman Nancy Lewis said Tuesday.

The move represents the district’s formal statement of intention to terminate the teacher’s contract.

The teacher, Kathy Moegle, 55, recently was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Independence. Police also were investigating whether Moegle took alcohol into the school.

Moegle, of Kansas City, North, taught fifth grade at Blackburn.

According to police reports, the school principal last week told a school resource officer that he thought Moegle had brought alcohol to the school. The officer suggested the principal have her call someone to pick her up if she had been drinking, but she refused and drove off.

The officer followed her onto Missouri 291, stopping her at Hidden Valley Road after she failed to use a turn signal and crossed the center line. Police administered a breath test and, according to the reports, Moegle’s blood-alcohol concentration was 0.17, more than twice the legal limit.

The principal recovered a bottle of margarita mix that contained alcohol at the school. It was turned over to police.

Moegle is on paid administrative leave while Independence school officials complete their investigation.

I would guess that's a pretty serious alcohol problem...... a .17 is a pretty high test to be functioning at....
Hope she gets the help she needs and certainly glad she got arrested before she hurt someone.
