A Margaritaville/Jimmy Buffett Museum in Key West or Nola

Post by Bwana Paul »

I actually believe this needs to happen someday.

In one of the following places....

New Orleans
Key West
West Palm Beach
Charleston
Mobile
Pascagoula

....Of those places, I think it should be in New Orleans...because Key West does not have as much space and New Orleans was where it started anyway.

Maybe they could charge admission of $7.50 or so.

Tour, recording, writing, personal specimens...maybe a few exhibits. Some interactive.

But enough from me, what do you think about this idea?

My first thought was Pascagoula.

I think a map of the tropics, the Bahamas, Caribbean, the Gulf Coast or a globe would suffice. Although JB started out in New Orleans I don't think a JB tour would go over as well as the, say, so called haunted house tours - he just didn't do that much in New Orleans and possibly like the haunted house or vampire or buggy tours there is an element of truth missing to the stories.

Besides aren't there about 24 Margaritaville's around now?

That page is a bit misleading because there are 3 in the Caribbean (Cayman, Jamaica, Grand Turk) and 3 in Mexico (Cancun, Cozumel, Air Margaritaville-Cancun), which would bring the total to 14 ;)

I'm going to pass on this idea. We have the music and the music that he has influenced. We have his writings. We have the Margaritaville cafes as well as the CIP chain. He has built and will continue to build a legacy without the help of a museum. If the museum were to happen I would like it to be something that Jimmy puts his stamp of approval on. Also, when I think of a museum I think of it being for someone who is a has been or dead, and Jimmy is very much alive and well and doing what he loves.

Interesting...

Post by Bwana Paul »

I recently talked to a former employee of JB's and she said that this idea actually may be in the works...

I think it will eventually happen. The Allman Brothers Band has The Big House museum... I am sure a Buffett museum would have enough artifacts to fuel the imagination. And as we all know the Allman Brothers still are very much touring with fervor.

I don't know if it should be a tour...maybe something that people can walk around and see the exhibits for themselves. Old posters from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s.

Photographs of JB with presidents... info about the band members.

Guitars, manuscripts and original handwritten lyrics encased in glass...

Total

There are 17 total Margaritaville Locations if you include the free-standing store in Charleston. That number will go to 18 when the Hawaii location opens.

He said many years ago that he would never do this, but I guess he has his reasons! :)

It's amazing how the Margaritaville Cafes have grown. What started out as a T-shirt shop in Key West turned into something big. Jimmy certainly does know how to sell a fantasy, and better for him to do it than for someone else to cash in on him. Behind that beach bum image lerks a very smart hard working businessman who has earned his success.

If there were to be a museum I would not want the tours especially if it were the kind of tour where you are given a head set at the door to hear the recorded audio tour. I hate those things. I would just want to walk around and look at the various exhibits.

I would actually prefer a really nice book that is accurate with great pictures and various stories about recording sessions, what didn't make any albums (regardless if they ever got released in some way) and so on.

A museum? Jimmy Buffett is not a war plane or some massive casualty number on a cold beach somewhere.

Book idea

Post by Bwana Paul »

Yeah, I totally agree about the book idea. It'd be for sale in the gift shop. :)

As for the museum...I guess, I saw the Allman Brothers Band museum in Macon, Georgia...and I thought it was the coolest thing around.

They have an Elvis museum, why not JB?

I think it's a matter of time.

Granted, there are "museums" out there for less significant reasons, but I certainly don't think Buffett needs one. Let's keep our sanity here.

The sanity is - more Margaritavilles. THAT is realistic, whether it makes sense or not. Because it will happen.
