Symptoms of Keys Disease

Post by Bfan53again »

Another thread in this forum talks about the very real possibility that a strange affliction called "Keys Disease" exists.

TSU86 posts: I went about 6 weeks ago for the first time ... OMG, we loved it.

Unfortunately, I think on the first trip, you just kind of take it all in, and try to figure out what KW is all about, and really miss alot. My next trip, I'm gonna stop rushing all over, and just grab a bar stool and chilllllllllllll.

Then, digitalprintman added:
That kinda sounds like what is called "Keys Disease".

It's always fun to see the people that are cranked and just don't get the whole mood of Key West and the Keys. It is very laid back. The shop may say they open at 9 am but that's just an estimate. Whenever they get there is opening time. It can take a couple of days to get into the Keys frame of mind. Most times the people that are in for a day or two just don't have the time to chill out. Sometimes they get upset because everyone else seems to be lazy or so laid back that you wonder if they have a heart beat or not.

It's a different way of life from what most of us deal with on a day to day basis.

I thought it might be fun to list some "symptoms" that we BNers suffer after visiting the Keys and wrote:

Symptoms may include:
> A daily craving for a fresh fish sandwich (preferably from B. O.'s) and a piece of key lime pie (from Kermit's)
> Taking your dress shoes and socks off at the office, closing your eyes, and imagining the sand between your toes (can be embarrassing if your superiors notice the smell during an "important" meeting)
> Wearing your sunglasses on cloudy days......inside
> Sneaking shots of tequila in your morning coffee
> Arguing that "sunset" is the most important time of day
> A desire to tell your boss to.......I better stop now

Anybody want to add to the list? How does "Keys Disease" affect you?????
On most days I say: "Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been...."
Sometimes I can only say: "There is no dumbass vaccine......"

If something or someone gets you down, just remember: "In a hundred years it all won’t matter.........."

My Mom and a couple of friends spent January and February at Cudjoe Key about 25 miles north of Key West. They experienced the local's Keys Disease.

They needed some services done at the house that they rented. So the call goes in to schedule them to come out. A time is set. The day comes that they are suppose to show up. No one comes to the house, they didn't call to say we won't be out. Of course it was a nice day, so hence Keys Disease kicked in. Mom and her friends were frustrated. A few days later the service guy did show up like nothing was wrong.

Other service people were more attentive such as the pool guy. He informed the group what Keys Disease is. If it's a nice day it is not uncommon for somebody to just not show up. They may decide to go fishing or hang out at the beach or just decide to go party. Work is not a real priority unless it fits into their schedule.

As Mom and the group got settled in they did come to accept this. This I attribute to them getting their own Keys Disease. They started to let loose of their stress and did not get too upset when somebody just didn't show up. At that point they'd just say, it's just another case of "Keys Disease". Then, "I guess we'll see them when we see them".

My wife and I went down last week for my 30th birthday and we loved it. I had wanted to go there for the last 20 years, so this trip meant a lot to me. We left weather that was sunny and warm to come back to snow and ice in Toledo. I think about going back everyday.

Ususally when we decide to get away, we always plan to do more things than we have time for and it really seems rushed sometimes. Most of that is my fault for wanting to hit the local joints for drinks or rushing for early tee times.

When we hit the keys, we had one busy day and we took it easy the rest of the trip. Everything was sooooo laidd back down there. I thought that I took it easy in my life, but I am not even close to the "island type lifestyle".

The first part of the first post really says it all and sounds like a verse from a JB song:
"Take it all in, its a big as it seems
Count all your blessings, remember your dreams"
I think I'll take my shoes off and go walking
Down beside the Caribbean Sea. . .

Palm Trees and views I can't believe
Why would I ever want to leave?

So glad you made it down to KW. Our first visit was last April and like you "I think about going back everyday......." Looks like you have the telltale symptoms of "Keys Disease", too.....ain't it grand? Fix yourself a margarita, close your eyes......yeah, you're there 8)

Hi, My name is Shannon, and I have Keys Disease!

My wife and I got married in KW in 06, and went back last year. We decided to skip it this year, and were MISERABLE on vacation!

Our current symptoms:
-Reading the Key West Citizen on the internet everyday
-Looking at the Monroe County Fire/Rescue Website and thinking "Hmmmm, still hiring FF/Paramedics!"
-Having Kermit's Key Lime pie shipped to us.
-Counting down the days until we can return!

Currently self-treating with Conch Fritters from Margaritaville New Orleans, wistfully looking at vacation pictures, and lots of Mojitos (you can actually find good ones in Louisiana!) and of couse lots of Buffett!
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Acceptance of a problem is the first key to recovery.......but wait, who said we want to recover????????? :pirate:

Yes, Shannon, I, too, share some of those same symptoms and I admire your rather aggressive self-treatment options!

I have to say, the fritters at M'Ville can not compare to those at Alabama Jacks! Simply amazing.

So the other day it was a really nice day. I decided to leave work early , call in personal to the other job and take the kayak out in the mangroves. I spent the next five hours in a kayak with some good friends and a cooler between my legs. Explored the mangroves, had a pinic on our yaks , washed it down with some Hienies and enjoyed a sunset from the open water out by channel marker 6. :)

Is this what is refered to as Keys Diesease? I just live here. To me it is par for the coarse. :) HAHA.

Another aspect to Keys Disease is the feeling that you have found a home and you want to go live there one day. Talking to people who moved to Key West after visiting is one of our favorite things to do. One person we talked to on a visit in 2003 is the guide at the Heritage House on Washington Street. Mike somebody, I have his card on my desk here somewhere. He was the first Asa Tift* actor in the Shipwreck Emporium. He said he used to just walk the streets at night with tears running down his face, feeling like he finally found his home. We listened with rapt attention, and he said, "You'll live here one day," like he recognized the longing in us.

Another one we talked to during our visit for Frank's birthday in Nov. 2004 was a waitress at Sloppy Joes. She talked about how after a visit she couldn't wait to get everything in order and move there. During our next visit in July 2007, the same waitress waited on us again and REMEMBERED us and our conversation from three years ago! We were dumbfounded. We feel like Key West is a second home. Also, during that 2007 visit we met writer Tom Corcoran (who co-wrote Fins with Jimmy) during a book reading and felt like we made a new friend.

*Asa Tift built and lived in the Hemingway House for 30 years. His nephew founded the city of Tifton where we live in South Georgia.

Great story.....and I'm a huge fan of author Tom Corcoran and his Alex Rutledge mysteries set in the Keys. I just saw on his web site that another such novel is in the works! :pirate:

I've been a regular in Cayo Hueso since November 1970. My first visit was to friends who were stationed there in the Navy. My in-laws had just moved to Miami and they kept the 'keet while then-spouse and I spent a couple of days down there. I instantly fell in love. My friend worked at KW Handprint as a printer while her husband served. The first night we went to dinner somewhere in town and then to the Chart House, then to Greene Street and the Parrot. With folks in Miami (or as the 'keet called it, Gramma's Ami), I made frequent visits (didn't tell anyone that my friends had shipped out ;). Coulda been part of the reason for the divorce 6 years later. I did run across JB several times there, even got to hang out a couple of times, but nothing memorable for him I'm sure.

When I started dating my current and LAST husband, a hardened cop, I knew it wasn't gonna work unless he could love KW as much as I did. The first time I took him there, we were just there for the day (stayed at a friend's condo in Islamorada). Our car broke down in front of what is now Cafe Sole and the owners took us in for the night, made arrangements for our car to get towed to a locals' garage for repair and sent us off with a great breakfast. He was hooked!!! We've gone at least once a year since. Have found a fabulous B&B on William Street where we're always "welcomed home."

I could list an epistle of our Key's Disease symptoms, but suffice it to say, we hope that a cure is never found! :wench:

I am happy living at the beach on the left coast, but I know I must never visit the Keys because I just wouldn't come home. (I am still talking about Hawaii that way and I haven't been there in 20 years.) If I visited the Keys, my family would never hear from me again.....I'd just disappear.
