Flying isn't an option for those of us who carry guitars - weight and baggage limits.
Fortunately, it's a lovely drive.

No air booked yet or the car, but we are registered and have confirmed our place to stay

The problem in Florida renting a car is the extra fees. I went to Key West 4 weeks ago and the car cost 250 for 3 plus 3 hours which made 4 days. I think its better to fly in to Key West. Saves time
I always do the math. Once in a while cars are so high that it does end up cheaper to fly directly to KW.
Enterprise will not even give you a 50% off weekend down there. Here are the extra fees rental car compaies charge in south Fla
Rental Car Facility charge $3.95 per day
Concession Recoupment fee 10%
Florida Surcharge $2 oer day
Tire/Batter Fee .02 oer day
License Recoumnet Fee .46 per day
State Tax 6.0%
every place charges fees on top of the advertised rate.
Not like FLA

so basically when you add it all up, about 35% or so of the rental rate, on top of the advertised rate. While I may not travel to the extent you do, that seems about par with everywhere else. Now, the rates may also be higher in SoFL than some places, but as a percentage, I think it's about the same.

I saw a rate of $66 plus fees for a mid-size rental car from FLL to EYW......just one way for the day(Dollar and Budget)......if anybody is looking. Last year we got a convertible for that price, so it's more expensive this year......but still cheaper than flying into EYW for us. Right now DCA to FLL is $138 but to EYW it's $302.
More money for.......buying Jumbie at the liquor store just before you hit Card Sound Rd.......

as long as you are going that way, you might as well stop at AJ's.

Sadly, Papa Joe's is no longer.

I think Hurricane Wilma was their last straw.
(Unless, of course, someone reopened them since I was down last November...which would be a Good Thing...)
