THREE MILE ISLAND REVISITED

Post by big john »

With the 30-year anniversary of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant accident
approaching this little gem appeared:

TMI moves communications base 55 miles from plant
by DAVID WENNER, The Patriot-News Saturday January 03, 2009, 10:00 AM
If there's ever another accident at TMI, the main source of information will be in Coatesville -- 55 miles away. That's where local reporters would have to go to speak to officials of the nuclear power plant near Middletown in Dauphin County.

Plant owner AmerGen has merged the Susquehanna Twp. emergency communication center with one based in Coatesville, near the company's regional headquarters. That center serves two other plants.

AmerGen said the site is within driving distance of Harrisburg-area news media, and is also bigger and better than the one it replaced.

Three Mile Island Alert, a local watchdog group, opposed the move, for reasons including the possibility of communication breakdowns.

AmerGen contends modern communications technology such as satellites and Internet access can help bridge the gap and provide direct, effective communication.

Back when the accident occurred you couldn't get any info from the local
news. You had to tune into the Philadelphia stations to find out what was
going on. Either way, WTF!!! :pirate:

Unfortunately in many small town local news outlets the news tends to be extremely biased and sometimes for good just reasons. You don't want to paint your town to be a bad place and risk loosing industry. It's one of those negatives that one learns to cope with living in small town America. The way I see it is you can think the TMI officials realize that having the ability to apply pressure for favorable press or you can think they're letting the small town reporters get the big break stories. In reality- it's probably a mixture of both.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.

Communication breakdowns?!?!?!?!?!?!? Have they not been paying attention? Do ANYTHING embarrassing and it'll be on youtube in 0.3964 nanoseconds. Seems like a business move to me, although I suppose some people will always find a nefarious reason behind everything. Jeez, it's been 35 years. Time to ease up a bit.
