If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Re: 2009 Baseball Season
I would probably say no where at the beginning of the season. In the middle of the season, a team in playoff contention and needs an extra boost will pick him up (my guess... the Mets, Phillies, Yankees, or the Cubs).Frank4 wrote:Anyone have any thoughts on where Manny is going to wind up?

Those would all be good spots for him. Boras is really looking like a fool for not being able to get him a deal.aeroparrot wrote:I would probably say no where at the beginning of the season. I would not hold out against either L.A team picking him up either.

If you use the LA theme, I would say the Angels more than the Dodgers.Frank4 wrote:Those would all be good spots for him. He did fabulous in that line-up last year. I think he would do well in the Angel line-up alsoBfan53again wrote:Speaking of Manny:

It works both ways. Teams don't show any loyalty to the players anymore either.Bfan53again wrote:Loyalty as shown by first-class players like Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken, Jr. is, I'm afraid, becoming a rather rare commodity in today's sports world....too bad.

Re: 2009 Baseball Season
I'd say Dustin Pedroia showed loyalty to the Red Sox asking for half the money he could have gotten. They also got similar treatment from Kevin Youklis. Both are classy, hard working players that would prefer the team have money to surround them with quality players, than break the bank and suffer on a sub-par team.Bfan53again wrote:I'm listening........care to discuss?????SharkOnLand wrote:It works both ways. Re: 2009 Baseball Season
Agreed, players like that find it more important to stay a Red Sox player, for example, than just "go for the money". Think Gwynn and Ripken could have gotten more dollars as free agents than staying with "their" team for a whole career? Sure. I was just trying to understand the comment of teams not showing loyalty to players. I'm guessing the writer refers to a player that's traded when a contract extension cannot be worked out, the player will become a free agent, and the team gets nothing in return.......C-Dawg wrote:I'd say Dustin Pedroia showed loyalty to the Red Sox asking for half the money he could have gotten. Re: 2009 Baseball Season
Pedroia was only in his 2nd year......i don't think he would of been eligible for FA for another 3 years.....i'm not sure but pretty sure he would of gone to arbitration these next 3 years....so they signed him to a contract!!....not sure on how that all works.Bfan53again wrote:Agreed, players like that find it more important to stay a Red Sox player, for example, than just "go for the money". Re: 2009 Baseball Season
I don't follow baseball as much, but the LT situation in San Diego comes to mind. The GM makes fun of the long-time Charger RB, and he's on the trading block? I'm sure similar situations have happened in baseball. Long-time team players get traded while they still have "value".Bfan53again wrote:I'm listening........care to discuss?????SharkOnLand wrote:It works both ways. They aren't the only ones.C-Dawg wrote:Hey Jack....sounds like someone needs a new shirt. Add that bone head decision to the bone head decision to make Scott "Bone Head" Boras your agent and getting divorced with three kids at the time you are signing for roughly .50 cents on the dollar (Jason loses atleast 30% of that to his ex - wife) and Tek - you are a bone head. A Hall of Fame Bone Head. But a Bone Head nonetheless.
In all seriousness, I agree, Boras spent so much time making money with Texiera, that he didn't concentrate on his other clients like Manny and Tek. They both are going to get screwed in their next contracts.
Ben Sheets turned down a contract offer from Milwaukee, then turned down arbitration. Now he's having trouble getting a contract offer....odds are that he will make about 1/3 of what he was expecting, half of what the Brewers were offering. There are others as well...

Re: 2009 Baseball Season
Loyalty:
It's very common for a player to "test the free agent market" when their time comes.
Why would a team remain loyal to a player?
It's nice when someone spends their career with you, but if they don't...don't cry about it. Move on.
Look at how badly it ended in Green Bay for Brett Favre.
Trevor Hoffman is a Brewer.
Emmitt Smith retired with the Cardinals.
John Smoltz is an injured Red Sox.
It has, is, and will continue. There is no reason to be loyal these days...it's just nice when it actually happens.
