I don't know anything about the condition, BB, but I sure hope he will be okay.

Thanks everyone, for thinking of me.
I just got a call from my sister who spoke to my stepmom about the oncologist appointment yesterday. Looks as though chemo or radiation will not be the next course of treatment. The expanse and type of the cancer in his liver would only extend his life by about 2 months with the chemo, and would make it pretty unbearable. So, it looks like he'll spend the next, and last 6 months of his life focused on pain management and Hospice care.
I hate cancer.

Man, all that sucks. I'm really sorry to hear this. Chemo can take a major toll on the body; it's really hard to see someone who has gone through it. It makes you hurt.
Good thoughts to you and your family.

Thank you.
I've seen my mom go through chemo. Her treatments were very successful and she has been in remission from bladder cancer for going on 10 years.
My dad is in the end stages (wheareas my mom's cancer was located in only one place and hadn't traveled to the lymph nodes). His cancer of the liver actually started somewhere else, and it just isn't containable. I didn't ask why the possiblity of liver transplant isn't an option, but I'm not the one in the position to be making medical decisions or suggestions for him. I am going up to see him (sans family) over Memorial Day weekend to help give my stepmom a break. She's pretty frazzled by the whole thing right now.
I have no idea if 6 months is a liberal or conservative estimate, but one of my sisters seems to think it will be more like 3 months. If he isn't able to eat any better than he is now, 3 months wouldn't surprise me.

He's actually not in a lot of pain yet he said. Mostly just having problems eating. Eating a lot of smoothies with protein powder and oatmeal. Doc said he can eat anything he wants that he can keep down. Still can't even swallow meat. My dad is a dude who loved to eat, so this is quite distressing to him--especially since when he does eat, he says it just tastes funny. It's the first time a doctor has ever told him he can eat whatever he wants whenever he wants.
They meet with hospice for the first time tomorrow. I hope that brings some peace to my stepmom.
My sisters and I are going up there (4 hour drive for my Denver sis and me and a 6 hour drive for my Vegas sister) on a rotating three week schedule to start off. Sis #1 is going a week from Monday, Sis #3 the week after that, and me over Memorial Day weekend.
We had planned on spending Christmas up there this year, and while we still may go up there to see my stepmom then, I think we'll be doing a Christmas in July. My 'lil Tony is super bummed because he really wanted to ride on their John Deere tractor (riding lawn mower

) He may get his chance, but not quite in the way he expects.
Still haven't told the kids yet.

Get the weight off of your shoulders and tell the kids, Mal. Subconsciously they already know. Kids just feel what is going on, they are SO intuitive. And this is part of life they need to learn how to deal with.
