Hemisphere Dancer
Jimmy said he - I thought I read this - was going to take the HD back out someday. Well - where the hell is it? It's still at the Lone Palm. When's he gonna fly it again? Come on - a flying boat vs. that little pontoon cork he flies around? Time's a wastin'.

Re: Hemisphere Dancer
I agree. Fly it again already!
I was lucky enough to check it out this past summer at the Lone Palm, but now that I have seen it up close, put 'er back up in the air.
I'll bet Frank Bama would fly it again!

I believe it isn't 'flyable' any longer??
It would take alot of work to get it back into flying condition.
Where's Albatross Flyer?

Re: Hemisphere Dancer
I did some quick searching and everything I read about the HD says it has been "retired" at the Lone Palm. But it sticks in my mind that when Jimmy first put the plane at City Walk, he said it would not take long to get her airworthy again. I could be wrong, but for some reason I recall reading that somewhere.springparrot wrote:I believe it isn't 'flyable' any longer??

Re: Hemisphere Dancer
I suspect she's been relegated to a tax deduction. I wouldn't expect to see her fly again.

well.. maybe for Jimmy it wouldn't take much.. but I seem to remember ittikitodd wrote:I did some quick searching and everything I read about the HD says it has been "retired" at the Lone Palm. Re: Hemisphere Dancer
Somewhat OT, but I love this plane.
I love it so much that when a good friend's mare foaled near my birthday and I was given the right to name the new horse, only one thing came to mind. Hemisphere Dancer. The foal was a colt, and we called him Hemi.

Maybe the guts are stored somewhere.
All he's gotta do is pull thing wings off, shove it on a trailer, put the guts in, put the wings on and...millions of dollars? Come on. That's way over the top there.
It should be flown again.

It is a beautiful plane, I'd like to see it flying around again.

I don't think this is off topic - it's about Jimmy's plane, which has to do with Jimmy.
Here is a link to JB's current sea-plane: a long tin can with floats on it. No flying boat.

making sure the avionics are up to snuff, checking the engines, having the wings inspected to prevent a repeat of the Chalk's crash in late 2005, it would be some cash. maybe a couple weeks' take from the LV M'ville.
doable, but desirable? probably not. He's moved on to bigger and better toys.

I kind of like knowing that we have a shrine of sorts that we can return to. A place where we can look, touch, and feel with our own hands the vessel that's been through so much. For example, wouldn't you just love to be able to see the Chicamauga up close? {{{sigh}}}

Re: Hemisphere Dancer
Rumor is that Jimmy's got one of these on order, and with radial engines instead of the turbines. (New Antilles G-21 Goose)
If that's the case, can't imagine he'd spend $$ to put the HD back up in the air.

Re: Hemisphere Dancer
regardless of jimmy's initial intentions and plans to someday fly the HD again. It's no longer practical. while jimmy lavishes much attention to the outside, it get washed and waxed weekly, he never properly preserved the important stuff when he moved the plane to the Lone Palm. the engines were not pickled therefore the pistons will now be solidly rusted to the cylinders, the hydraulic system wasn't preserved, and a very significant amount of wires were cut during the dismantling for the move over to Lone Palm.springparrot wrote:I believe it isn't 'flyable' any longer??

Where's Albatross Flyer?
Let me put it this way, if a client came to me with an HU-16C in this condition, I would recommend buying another aircraft to restore instead of trying to fix it.....

the chalk's crash was a grumman mallard not an albatross....RinglingRingling wrote:making sure the avionics are up to snuff, checking the engines, having the wings inspected to prevent a repeat of the Chalk's crash in late 2005, it would be some cash. maybe a couple weeks' take from the LV M'ville.

the short wing albatross (HU-16A/C models like the HD) do not have the life limited wing spar caps like the long wing HU-16B/Ds do. 12 of the 13 G-111s that were flown by chalks have the titanium spar cap mod which lifts the life limit on the wing.
if you gave me the necessary pile of cash, it would take in the order of 6 months to a year to return the HD to a minimal airworthiness.

Re: Hemisphere Dancer
Wow - I didn't realise Jimmy just essentially trashed the HD.
Well, if he gets one of those Gooses, then he'll be back in a flying boat. And that's a nice looking plane too.
I sometimes go see the Albatross in Mobile.

....Goose is small compared to the Albatross....... and radials??? sure, traditional but throw them turbines on!!!! Didn't Jimmy have a widgon at one time or another? or was it the Lake I was thinking of....??? Caravan is a nice rig.....fast, more efficent and cheaper than a twin......

Re: Hemisphere Dancer
knew the Chalk's Ocean Air flight was a Mallard, was figuring that the wing spar for the Hemisphere Dancer would still need a really good going over to make sure that it was sound.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:the chalk's crash was a grumman mallard not an albatross....RinglingRingling wrote:making sure the avionics are up to snuff, checking the engines, having the wings inspected to prevent a repeat of the Chalk's crash in late 2005, it would be some cash. maybe a couple weeks' take from the LV M'ville.
