Dungy done
http://www.kansascity.com/491/story/976668.html
The Indianapolis Colts have scheduled a press conference for Monday afternoon, at which time head coach Tony Dungy is expected to call it quits.
According to FOXSports.com, Dungy has begun saying goodbye to players and team personnel at the club's headquarters.
Dungy has spent the past seven years with the Colts, guiding the team to the playoffs each year. His crowning achievement came after the 2006 season when the Colts beat the Chicago Bears in Super XLI.
The Colts were 12-4 this season and finished second in the AFC South behind the 13-3 Tennessee Titans. However, the club went one-and-done in the postseason for the second straight year following their Super Bowl triumph, losing to the Chargers, 23-17, in the wild card round on January 3 in San Diego.
Like he did last season following a playoff loss to the Chargers, Dungy decided to take some time away before making an announcement on whether he would return to the club. Indianapolis was defeated by the Chargers, 28-24, last postseason and after a week's worth of speculation, Dungy declared he would return for his seventh season with the club.
At the same time, the Colts announced that Jim Caldwell would eventually succeed Dungy as head coach.
Dungy spent this past week discussing his future with his family and reportedly met with owner Jim Irsay on Sunday.
The Colts have won at least 10 games in each season under Dungy, who is 85-27 as Indy's head coach in the regular season and 7-6 in the postseason. Dungy's tenure includes five straight AFC South titles from 2003-07.
Despite Dungy's success in Indianapolis, the Colts have failed to win at least one playoff game in four of those seven postseason appearances.
Before joining the Colts, Dungy spent six years as the head coach of Tampa Bay. He had a regular-season mark of 54-42 with the Buccaneers, guiding them to four playoff appearances.
Dungy is the only coach in league history since the merger to take a team to the playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons.

With all the asshat coaches in the league, it's a shame to lose a class guy like Tony.
Enjoy retirement Coach Dungy.

Dungy stated earlier in the year he wanted to spend more time with his missionary/faith based charities and endeavors...SharkOnLand wrote:Wonder if he stays retired or gets bitten by the coaching bug after he's been out of the league for a year.....

Re: Dungy done
I know he's said that, but I imagine it's hard for a guy to stay away, if he loves the game. He does have a lot of other stuff to keep him busy though.blackjack wrote:He has said earlier this year, that when he retires, he will be done.

Re: Dungy done
from Wiki...

The local high school put in new turf last summer and it's now called Dungy Field. I used to deliver mail to his parents. He built them a moderate home when he made the NFL, in the same neighborhood he grew up in. He was long gone before I moved here, but he still makes appearances for charities, etc. He got Bill Cosby to come here and do a free show to start an endowed chair in his dad's name at the local community college. A little trivia...I believe he's the last NFL player to intercept a pass and throw an interception in the same game.Born in Jackson, Michigan, Dungy is one of the four children of Wilbur and CleoMae Dungy, both of whom were educators. Wilbur was a physiology professor, while Cleomae was a high school English teacher.[2] They encouraged a focus on academics early on in their children's lives. Tony Dungy attended Parkside High School, where he played guard position on the basketball team and the quarterback position on the football team.[2] Dungy was featured in the Sports Illustrated section Faces in the Crowd in the January 26, 1970 issue[3] which profiled his accomplishments as a high school athlete when he was 14 years old.[4]

Re: Dungy done
According to AP, assistant Jim Caldwell is going to replace him. What I want to know is how can they do that. I thought the teams could not name successors because it violated the Rooney rule. Didn't this happen in Seattle this year or last year?

Re: Dungy done
It's probably ok because Caldwell is black. But if other teams can't name successors, they shouldn't be able to either.
