When I have the money, I'll spend at least part of every year in Hawaii.

I can't imagine living very far from the ocean.

Neither can I. The furthest I had ever lived from the ocean was when I was in DC. That was about 100 miles from the ocean. Yes I know DC is on the Potomac but that is a river and not near an ocean.

Happy here ...

Very laid back people we are us aussies ...... no pomp or ceremony (eg british stuff- we shed all that)

We dont have extreme winters

We only have some extreme summers (everyone does I guess) - thats the only negative - dont like the summer!

We dont have cyclones, hurricanes, tornadoes, snow storms here in my state. Just the odd earthquake ....... (like every 20 years or so) - so it is pretty safe from most of natures anger.

Low crime rate - safe to go most places - people dont need to have weapons

Low congestion of population in the part of Sydney I live in

Have travelled to most continents - we got the best weather here ...... and is still the best place I would want to live!

I agree with Sydney, Australia but I feel that New Zealand is also a great place. Great scenery, friendly people, warm (not humid) summers, and moderate, wet winters. No snow (except in the south, if you're into that sort of thing).

I am a teacher here in Auckland and was able to find a job within two months, unlike two years of substitute teaching in Michigan. There are also grants that you can get if you are an international teacher that gets a teaching job here (up to $2000 in the first year) The schools here are great and there are plenty of fantastic beaches. It's a laid back place with tons of opportunities.

I really like Michigan! Love the four seasons. You are never more than a little jaunt from a lake and really not far from the "big water." There is wilderness very close by. The cost of living is nothing like other parts of the country. The summers are lovely. The winters are, well, winter and what makes traveling to warmer climates worthwhile. :P

I'd love to spend summers in the Upper Peninsula near Lake Superior. And the winters here with occasional trips to the Caribbean or Hawaii. I've been to Florida and the "hot states" in the summer. I nearly died. You could never convince me to live there year round. Anything over 80 and I'm really uncomfortable.

Best of luck! There is a "right" place for everyone! Mine happens to be in the Great Lakes State.

I am actually from Newcastle .... and will eventually return up that way to live out my days (a while off yet!) ..... and Newcastle is just a great laid black "small" city around the size of Auckland - just the right size! I have visited Auckland and it was a pretty nice place!!!! Kiwi's are pretty similar in outlook and lifestyle to the aussies ... cept for that little thing about the sheep

You're right about everything you say here, but the economy in Michigan, and teaching in general, is what drove us away. That and the fact that my wife is a kiwi and all her family is here. When you are fighting with over 2000 other applicants for a single teaching job each time, it makes it hard to stick with that state if you don't know someone. Hell, I knew people and STILL couldn't land that big fish! We are praying Michigan comes out of its economic funk soon...it will THEN be a nice place again.

Not much love in this thread for Orlando :-?

My clothes are shorts, hawaiian shirts and flip flops -
the weather here definitely suits my clothes!!

We have lived here for over 10 years, and love it.
Sure it's hot and humid in the summer, that is why we have air conditioning.

The weather here is beautiful most of the year, we almost never go more than 24 hours without serious sunshine. Other than occasional cool snaps, even in January it is at least 70 most days. 8)

The economy here is good, the cost of living pretty much on the national average.
No state income tax, either coast is less than an hour away.

If I were to recommend a place for a newcomer, it would probably be gulf coast between Tampa and Ft Myers. Beautiful beaches over there, and the trop rock music scene seems to be centered over there.

Hey z-man.....I'd be just fine with Orlando! :pirate:

Just kind of starting dreaming about international places there...... :o

I was born and raised in Green Cove Springs, a nice small town south of Jacksonville and west of St. Augustine. I'm about 30 miles from the Atlantic. Being that it's north Florida it does get a little cold but we have a nine month summer that makes up for it. The heat does not bother me one bit. I like it sticky hot hot hot!
Fave things to do are cruise topless/doorless in the Jeep, boat on the St. John's River and hit the beach! Heck in Florida you're never more than 60 miles from the ocean.
As for the economy, I guess it's great cause I'm livin' large yo

If I had to move somewhere else it would either be St Auggie or Cudjoe Key.

Where I live in Iowa isn't TOO bad in the summer, but, if you're a hard core parrothead, you end up pretty much wishing your life away-every year around late October or early November, you begin saying "I WISH IT WERE SUMMER." Your life goes on hold anywhere from four to six months.
I lived in Hawaii for 11 years, prior to that, I lived in places like Japan, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
I'd love nothing more than to go back to Hawaii for good, but, being the only sibling in my family who is close enough and ABLE enough to help my parents, I'll be here for as long as each of them are alive.
After that, it's pure speculation. My youngest sister's M.S. is progressing from the moderate to advanced stage, and, her having just turned 48, I don't know if she'll want me to become her primary care giver in the next few years, but I know, other than myself and my parents (who are both in their 80's), she doesn't trust anyone else.
So who knows.

Where I'd like to be-the Florida Keys, St. Augustine, Hawaii, or the South Pacific (if I REALLY wanted to fantacise), but, for now and the forseeable future, I'm stuck here in this arctic wasteland.
