My favorite centerfire rifle: my Mini 14.
Favorite centerfire semiauto handgun: Glock 22 and Ruger P97 (tie).
Favorite centerfire revolver: Ruger GP100.
Favorite rimfire handgun: Ruger Single Six.

Just put a box of hardball through my P97 today -- SWEET shootin' gun!

Love to shoot! But that hobby takes a backseat to most everything else I love to do. I have handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Never got into muzzleloaders yet. I get the most use out of my sig-saur 40, and my old marlin lever action .22. A few times a year some of us around the neighborhood dust off the shotguns and throw some clays up in the backyard- its just plain good clean fun for us! For the last few years the rifles and heavy revolvers have been quiet, but they will have their time in the field again soon!

One of the reasons I prefer handguns is that I'm not at all sensitive to handgun recoil, while anything over a .30/06 in a rifle is unpleasant for me to shoot.

One gun I need is a good 1911 -- they fit my hand perfectly.

I hear rumors, btw, that JB is a 1911 fan.

Actually, since it's a single stack auto and its grip is fairly thin, it's not really a "big hands" gun; it fits my small-medium sized mitts perfectly (as does my Ruger P97).

Lots of the double stack autos ARE "big hands" guns, since their butts/grips are fat to allow the double stack magazines inside. The Beretta 92F is one of the worst in this regard.

I was gonna say the 1911 is a fairly universal sized sidearm.......not all that big........compared to my Desert Eagle .44, it's downright tiny.......
I too enjoy the arms.....I grew up hunting and have a collection of sidearms, rifles and shotguns......favorite handgun is the desert eagle.....rifle is the M1A1 (tho....I am partial to the M4) and shotgun is the O/U Berretta trapgun.......

The John Browning 1911 design is one of the most well known and long lived around the world.

There are actually several designs and numerous modifications. (1911, 1911A1, etc ) However in keeping this brief, on the handgrip or "butt" you can have either a flat or an "arched" backstrap.
It is definitely not a tiny gun. But it usually fits most shooter's hands quite comfortably.
I know of many women that could shoot the 1911 .45 ACP consistantly and accurately.

The Desert Eagle is an unfair comparison as it is definitely massive in size and weight. It is really too heavy and bulky for most people in most normal carry situations. Great firearm though. They can be a bit finicky when it comes to being cleaned and loads about every 100-150 rounds Mine was in .357 and it did not care for "light" (110/125 grain bullet) loads.
Then again it was not designed for them. It's accuracy could not be beat. Nor could it be beat firing 2 accurate on target rounds-to-1 against most revolvers.

Para-Ordinance makes high capacity 1911 type frames, with a double stack magazine. Check them out. You will no doubt be surprised by the grip.

I would suggest that the .270 Win as a "middle caliber" long gun. Recoil is light and definitely not punishing at all. It is flat shooting and in capable hands it can reach well beyond 500 yards. It is capable of taking every big game critter on the North American Continent. If one wants a short throw bolt action, the .308 (7.62 NATO) is an excellent round but the recoil might be a bit stiff for some. Muzzle brakes do wonders. One might perhaps consider the .243 Win or the Remington 6mm for a short throw bolt.

All firearms are tools. Just like any other tool, you want to apply and use the right one for the right job. Don't use a sledge hammer when you need a tack hammer....and vice-versa.

About the .270, a friend had a stainless/synthetic stocked Ruger a few years back that I shot and loved -- recoil was negligible. Then I bought a synthetic stocked Savage .270 and the recoil was MUCH worse. I ended up trading it to my brother who commented that it kicked harder than his Weatherby Vanguard 7mm Mag. Must be stock design. My brother has a Remington semiauto .30/06 whose recoil isn't bad at all, and strangely, my brother in law has a Savage woodstocked .30/06 that isn't bad, either. But that synthetic Savage 111 was a shoulder rocker.

Probably the weight of the rifle along with the stock design. I have a friend with two 30.06s. One is fairly sweet, though a bit stiff on recoil. The other is a lightweight and kicks like a mule. I have suggested magna-porting or a muzzle brake for it to reduce the recoil. So far he has done neither.
My .270 is a Ruger M77. 10 year olds have fired it and had no complaints. I can shoot it all day long as long as I have ammo to feed it. A most phenonmenal factory rifle. Sweet trigger. With the right factory ammo (it likes Federal Premium 130 grain) will group under 1.25 inches at 150 yards. That is not just me saying that. Others have done it who thought I was BSing..No doubt a good handloader could reduce that even more.

I have a Savage 110E in 7mmMag. Has a synthetic stock and a built in muzzle brake. I have as of yet to put a scope on it and put it through it's paces. I had a friend that I lost contact with, that wanted to turn it into a long range gun for me. Anything under 800 meters was close range for him.

I am a big Sturm Ruger fan and own several of their rifles and handguns. From a .22 convertable New Model, to the .41 Mag Blackhawk. I also have a SS Ruger Mini-14 Ranch that is also very sweet to shoot.

Probably the most fun and labor intensive to shoot, is my CVA Hawkins .50 caliber blackpowder. Lots of fun though.

I guess you got your answer about BN'ers owning guns. I myself just got into this world of gun ownership and own two long rifles and one Ruger .357 revolver. From what I hear you better get what you can now before our new president tries to start changing gun control laws. This came from a local police officer who helped my wife get her firearms permit here yesterday. He said it's good for all Americans to get whatever guns and ammo they can. But I agree with the poster before that they are fun to shoot but bad to clean.

I don't mind cleaning my guns, especially my Glock and Ruger semi's, since they are easy to strip and clean. I don't do the black powder thing, though.

Ruger has a new lightweight polymer .38 revolver out, the LCR. Interesting but ugly as homemade soap:

Absolutely! I'm at the Boulder Rifle Club monthly now. Participated in a Defensive Pistol match last Saturday and next month will shoot in a 3-gun match.
