How's The Economy Affecting Your 2009 Vacation?

Lots of stories in the news about the steep decline in travel to the Caribbean due to the recession. American Airlines, the major carrier from the US to that part of the world, reports a reduction of 25% in its flights there.

Last year we had tentatively planned a sailing vacation in the BVI this April with 2 other couples. Then, last Fall, as the stock market tanked, the one couple, who had just retired, decided they had better cancel......too much uncertainty as to whether their retirement income would maintain its desired level (turns out, it hasn't, and the gentleman has taken a part-time job now.....that really stinks).

Have other BNers also altered their 2009 vacation plans to the Caribbean or anywhere else for that matter due to the recession? If so, are you still planning another, maybe lesser expensive vacatiion for this year?

Our government is handing out money to people left right and centre (except to me .. I earn too much ..) ... so people got plenty to spend. I am going on a trip later this year with my family - the first they have been able to afford -thanks to the govt.

So our travel is booming.

South Pacific cruise.

Govt gave families $1000 tax free per child, and pensioners $1400!

Cmon down Russ!

It is so bad here - I went to go to a travel agent on Saturday last weekend and they were all full of customers - so I went back first thing this morning so I could be first there and not line up!

We have a timeshare in Cancun, and if we hadn't been able to get the trip on frequent flyer miles this year, we wouldn't have gone.

However, I don't think renting our Villa would've been a problem. The management called us wanting to know if we were coming, because they have folks wanting to rent.

We leave Friday. :D

I'm not letting it effect our fun! We are heading out to Disney for 8 days on Wednesday, Mexico in May, and 6 road Buffett shows over the tour.

We've been pretty fortunate/lucky so far. We are going to Aruba in October with my FIL who has a time share there. We just have to pay for our airfare and food while we're there.

Plus, we'll spend our usual honeymoon weekend in Winter Park, CO come May.

We're due for a good vacation--haven't had one in going on 3 years.

I'll spend my 35th birthday flying HOME from Aruba.

My good friend just built a house in Winter Park and is on the resorts ski patrol. Let me know when your going out and I'll see if he can hook you up with a few things.

The economy won't have much impact on our 2009 vacation. We'll have a little more money to spend, but not enough to drastically change our travel habits.

The biggest limitations will be the amount of vacation time that I earn, just two weeks a year.

Hasn't changed for me. My employer had a record year last year, and I expect this year to top it. I am looking at my first cross country ride on my Harley, complete with a stop at Alpine if the rumored tour date holds up, a few days at Yosemite, and a cruise thru Sturgis on the way back. If work isn't too busy to let me take the trip.
