John Denver

Post by bestseller92 »

Any other JD fans here?

I became a JD fan about a year before his unfortunate death. I dug out my late mother's old "Back Home Again" tape and liked it a lot.

Like a lot of artists, you have to dig beyond the hit singles to really get an appreciation of John Denver. Some of my favorite lesser known JD songs are "Eclipse", the live Harbor Lights version of "Whispering Jesse", "Eagles and Horses" and "Foxfire Suite".

absotootley.

On another board we had a thread where we picked a song that best described or defined us (or something like that, forgot the exact wording). Had to think about it for awhile...but then it dawned on me..."Calypso".

To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean
To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm
To work in the service of life and the living
In search of the answers to questions unknown
To be part of the movement and part of the growing
Part of beginning to understand...

The local public television station had a JD special on during their most recent fund drive. I'm a sucker for those - so I am now a new member with a DVD of the show and a CD of some of his lesser known but great songs. My ex and I saw him many many years ago at Madison Square Garden and left the next morning for a vacation in Colorado. I'll never forget it.

My dad was a long time John Denver fan, but had never seen him in concert. On a whim, I bought my parents tickets to see him for their anniversary. It ended up being the last time he came to town before his death. I was always glad my dad got to see him before it was too late.

Some must-have JD albums: "The Harbor Lights Concert", "Back Home Again", "Windsong", "The Flower that Shattered the Stone", "Farewell Andromeda", "Seasons of the Heart" (nice version of "Nothing But a Breeze" on here) and "An Evening With John Denver".

Tom Becker of Latitude does an amazing job covering John Denver songs.

One of my favorites EVER. Loved his music since the mid/late 70's. :D :D

Finally got to see him a year or so before he died. It was outdoors and Fiddlers Green, the Rocky Mountains at sunset, and he sang Rocky Mountain High. I still cry over the emotional moment that was.

I've always been a John Denver fan. My first concert ever was John Denver. It was in DC somewhere, probably 1974. I thought it was the most amazing thing ever.

I really liked his music, although when it was played to death, I grew a little tired of it. I also respected him for his stand against censorship when he, Frank Zappa and Dee Synder testified before a Senate committee chaired by Al Gore. Tipper Gore was pushing for censorship and labels on music and had created the PRMC. I thought that Frank Zappa's testimony was very thoughtful and had great insight as to what the RIAA was really up. Dee was good for drawing the ire of the Senators. However it was John Denver who had the greatest impact. Here was a guy that epitomized being a "good American" and he was telling the Senators that what they were proposing was wrong and unAmerican. Too bad they didn't listen.

We have John Denver in the rotation up here at our house in the mountains! 8)

Last summer, we played that cd at sunset on our deck one night with some drinks. Relaxing night!

There are quite a few videos of him singing on youtube, lots of obscure recordings. Anyone ever hear his song "Wild Flowers in a Mason Jar?" I heard that a few months ago for the first time and I really liked it.
"..he'll cook you a fish that he caught that day then belt out a song for the crowd, he'll drink half your beer, but don't worry buddy, the next ones on the house. I'm talkin' 'bout my kind of people..."

I either saw the same exact one, or one similar.
I'm a sucker for those too, and I also ended up getting the CD and DVD.

I've been a fan of this fantastic human being since the early 1970's, and, like a couple others here, also love his rarities, along with his greatest hits. He's one of those RARE singers who has recorded over 200 songs, of which there are NONE that I dislike. (I can't even say that about Jimmy).
I was lucky enough to see him in concert once. In 1982.

In addition to being a great singer/songwriter, he was also a great humanitarian.

He was also a great actor.
One of my all-time favorite movies is "OH GOD" with him, George Burns, and the very lovely Teri Garr. If you haven't seen that movie, you really should.

I think it's The Wildlife Concert he did in SO CAL for a charity event. It's my favorite collection of his songs too. Big time JD fan :D
