Nope...you can subscribe to a forum too.
go to forums button and click and when the list comes up, go to one forum (click on announcements for example)...and then you should see a "subscribe button" - top left of the discussion box

I hardly ever get email notifications and have mention to the higher ups, but still almost never get email notificationsstill. After a bit I just decided it wasn't anything to fret over.
