"Mature age" study

Post by creeky »

(trying to recover from calling myself mature  )

Anyone ever gone back to study ...... nearly 30 years after leaving school?

I left school at 15 after getting a govt job, and still here in it today ... 29 years later ...

We have been given 20 spots in our state for some people to get paid to do a government management course, that is a recognised university qualification .... I have nominated for it ... and think I have a pretty good chance of getting accepted ....

only thing that bothers me ... I didnt really study when I was at school  - I just got by on memory alone ... but I figure this might be a bit different ....

How difficult was it to get back in to that sort of thing?

Hey, you missed out on the "mature" discussion earlier, I guess.
(It's just as well, since that thread was purged just as soon as a moderator spotted it! )

I went back to school at 35 without ever learning to study, and I survived.
It took a lot of work, but it was well worth it. (Geeze! That was 25 years ago! )

I am 44 and in the middle of student teaching. I have been in school now for 5 1/2 years, two bachelors one in education one in history. It can be done even by those of us who cut school more then we went.

Went back to school at 36, and it made my head hurt, fer sure.
Just went back for some follow-up last fall, and, again, had to really work at it.

Oh and so you know, many many of the people in my classes were non-traditional students. They generally did better then the typical college kids. What I have found is that I did poorly in high school because I was lazy, boy crazy and liked to party a bit too much. I also had a very difficult home life. Now as an adult with control of my home life, a supportive husband and kids, and maturity I do very well. Even getting through two levels of algebra which I could barely pass with a tutor in hs was easy. You can definitely do this. You just need to organize your time and life a bit. You also have to be willing to let some things sit on the back burner while you are working on school work. I have a four day weekend and half of it will be spent cleaning my long neglected house.
