I think the plan for some of us is to hear Marius' speech at 6, I so wish there was reliable cell service so we could all stay in touch!

Anyone else taking an iTouch? I have discovered yet another way to keep in touch with my girls. Using wifi I can send them a message thru Facebook. They have their phones set up to get notifications from Facebook and will be able to reply back via their phone. I like that. Just another for us when we are in Gustavia or Ptit Morne.

We don't have an itouch . Our verizon phone won't work so if anyone needs to call us it will have to be at our villa.

For those staying - if you go to the fish market that is open early (0500-0900 or so), you can get fresh Mahi Mahi and other fish and cook back at your villa. Prices are very cheap, and the fish is excellent. Support the local fisherman as well. The fish market is at the end of the long waterfront heading back toward the airport. It is a small open air market, just ask someone and they'll send you in the right direction.

I know there is the guy that is just on the far side of Lorient just past the market. He cuts fish in his garage and usually has slipper lobsters. Same guy? I also have bought fish out of the back of a guys pick-up truck parked right near the airport. Don't miss getting fresh fish, it is amazing!

I prefer the fishmonger marketplace in Gustavia, but they're all good - every one of them sells fresher fish then most of us will ever find at home. One suggestion - stick to the bigger fish that are cut into filets/steaks, such as Mahi-Mahi and Tuna. A little French is helpful - Mahi-Mahi is Dorade (pronounced Doe-rod) in French, and Tuna is Thon (pronounced Tone). Prices are posted in Gustavia, and I don't try to negotiate. Lobsters, the spiny Caribbean kind, are often available too.

Yes, the guy across from the gas station! We bought enough Mahi Mahi for the six of us and it cost 16 Euro. Best fish I have had in a long time. When you go to the fishmonger in Gustavia take a look at the water next to the pier. The fish sit there and eat the remains of the fish that the fisherman throw over into the harbor. HUGE fish. I call it the St. Barths aquarium. They are only there when they are cutting fish.

As far as spices, we always used what was at the villa. You can buy some at the supermarket. On one trip I bought the Caribbean spices they sell at the Airport in St. Maarten. we were on our way home. I kept setting off the explosive detector at the screening points. Had my carry on torn apart each time. Last time I buy or carry spices.

Wow that caribbean spice must have had some "punch" to it. So what time are we talking get some great fish??? We are always up early... well I am. I just get Jim up. I say you can sleep when we get home!!! Good thing he goes along with it.

Sounds like Bahston may know a little better, but when I have been there the Gustavia pier shop has been sold out by 0900 or so. They seem to always have Lobsters though. I am spoiled by living in the Northeast and don't care for the Caribbean lobsters. When the Gustavia one is closed we look for the guy with the coolers in the pickup truck by the airport. We'll also stop in Lorient if we see that guy there (it's at the end of the road from our villa, so we go by a lot - he's never there!).

So, bottom line is be the early bird and get the fish in Gustavia early (0700 or so) then put in the fridge. Worth it!

Edited to add: The Wall House in Gustavia does some amazing fish dishes, just very expensive.

...I bring a few of my favorite spices that I know I can't get there...Since we usually stay at the same Villa, I put them in A zip loc and they store them with my espresso machine...one advantage of redundancy...

dmjcsurf is correct that you need to get to the fish market in town early. The fish feeding by the fish market are usually Tarpon.

Herbs and spices can be expensive. If you're planning to cook while on the island consider bringing small amounts from home in ziploc bags. They take up practically no room, and weigh next to nothing.

You'll find good produce in most of the supermarkets. I do most of my shopping at Match, in the block of stores across from the airport terminal, but I don't hesitate to shop at any of the others if they are more convenient. L'Oasis Supermarket is open from 8AM until 9PM. Many if not all of the others close for part of the afternoon.

Outside of the supermarkets, there are two butchers. One is Primantilles, located in the Les Mangliers commercial complex, which is straight back behind the airport gas station. http://www.primantilles.com/ (They are based out of Guadeloupe) The other is La Boucherie St Jean/O Marche Bio, which is located at the end of the St Jean away from the airport. http://www.st-barthsbutchershop.com/ You'll find excellent meats at both, as well as some other goodies.
