.... I don't know why people are upset. Boston College, as I said, is a private, Christian run college. They have a right to do this... All I am going to say is if those who are in BC, student and staff, don't like it, then they can leave.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

I agree with Ravi 100%. It's a private Catholic school. Why WOULDN'T they want to place symbols of their beliefs throughout the campus? If UMass (or any other public school) wanted to put a crucifix in every classroom I would be opposed to that, but people opposing religious symbols at a college run by a particular denomination? That's just nuts, and a little scary.....

I wholeheartedly agree, but there will be tenured professors who don't agree who will raise holy hell. (pun totally intended.

better the Jesuits than a hard-shell Baptist crew. At least the kids will come out with critical thinking skills.

Disclaimer: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a member of the Catholic faith.
"Boston College had quietly completed, without announcement or fanfare, an eight-year project to dramatically increase the presence of Roman Catholic religious symbols on campus."
"A meeting last month of arts and sciences department chairs turned into a heated argument over the classroom icons; a handful of faculty have written to the administration to protest, and some unsuccessfully circulated a petition asking to have crucifixes removed."
If the project took eight years and the department chairs just got around to discussing it last month, they might not be sharp enough to be teaching at the college level.
"Elissa Klein, director of Jewish life at Boston College, said: "I spoke to several Jewish undergraduates tonight, who were all apathetic about the new religious art. It seems that many failed to notice it entirely."
It doesn't seem to be upsetting people that are paying to be present on campus. If the customer doesn't have a problem, then there isn't a problem.

Agreed, however, I would also include private non-denominational schools too (like my college), I would be offended.SchoolGirlHeart wrote:I agree with Ravi 100%. It's a private Catholic school. I think it is more of the media causing a stink at this, and a couple of professors too.

I wouldn't agree with it at a private non-denominational school either, but that's up to the school and its student's IMHO, whereas at a state school I would be opposed on the grounds of public money being expended for religious symbols of any denomination.aeroparrot wrote:Agreed, however, I would also include private non-denominational schools too (like my college), I would be offended.SchoolGirlHeart wrote:I agree with Ravi 100%. Hmmm . . . Kinda like coming to a country founded by a bunch of Christians, and then complaining about all the Christian traditions and symbology . . .

Some people are not happy unless they have something to complain about. It is a beautiful statue of a great Saint.
I was taught by Jesuits and they are a pretty interesting bunch. Great teachers and thinkers, that have often clashed with the group in Rome over their existance.

I went to a Jewish law school. I'm not Jewish. There was a mezuzah on the doorframe of every classroom and office in the school. The building closed at 3:00 Friday afternoon and was closed all day Saturday to observe the Sabbath. In my 3 years there, I don't know of anyone who complained about that. It was a Jewish school, you should expect that. The people at BC who got their drawers twisted need to get over it.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here

I wonder if they make them take religious classes. I know it's required at Regis University in Denver, also a Jesuit school. But, as far as I know, they offer classes in a variety of different religions.
Maybe they should require a "Tolerance of Religions" class.

Sounds to me the prof's that have a problem with it should look for employment elsewhere.
And they better not even think about applying to Notre Dame. That giant mosaic of Jesus
on the library (a.k.a. "Touchdown Jesus") would scare the hell out of them. Complaining about
crosses and statues at a Catholic school. That's like working at a military base and complaining
about tanks and helicopters on display.

If they did not understand that they were working at a Catholic college they really are not qualified to be faculty there. I think they should add the crucifix to their paychecks and see if they really have the courage of their convictions.

Can't blame the media for reporting it. The article seemed rather fair to that point.. but yeah, what can they expect at a religious private college? Its almost like an Onion article.
