I've given up booze... and caffine. Not for Lent though.. for the kid i'm growing.. lol. There are days I wish it was just for Lent so I could fail and repent.

I refuse to give up chocolate.. especially when I can't have vodka.

Santa, I love your sense of duty! [smilie=coolup.gif]

I've never belonged to a church that encouraged or preached "giving up" something for Lent. I just do it for the spiritual discipline. Part of the discipline of doing it, though, is that you're not supposed to tell anyone, so I don't always make the grade!

When I belonged to a Presbyterian Church in North Georgia (Dalton), one year we all wore a heavy cross made of nails on a strip of rawhide for Lent. They gave them out at the Ash Wednesday service. It was so interesting to see people all over town at the grocery store, nurses in the doctors' examining room, etc. wearing those crosses. That was the spring my son learned to ride a bike, and I'll always remember his look of joy with that cross dangling around his neck and me running after him with mine hitting me in the face.

Our Pastor has given me a better perspective on this..."giving up" of stuff for lent. She pointed out it that sometimes it is not something you give up but instead something you add to your life that makes a change in a positive way. I am sure she is focused on a change that brings you closer to God. That said I can think of several changes that would be positive to me.....but, I probably shouldn't voice them in type. I would love to change my status of being celibate for almost 8 years :o :o :o ...I think that would be a great plus for me and could be a spiritual experience at this point as well. :wench:
