The Chieftains

Post by SeattleParrotHead »

Any fans of The Chieftains out there? They were in Seattle last night and will be in San Francisco tomorrow night as they swing through on their 34th US tour. I hadn’t seen them in nearly 30 years and as good as they used to be, I think they’ve improved with age! Paddy Moloney is amazing, he’s 70 and still going strong (let’s hope JB is still touring at 70!) Among the people playing with them on this tour is Alyth MacCormack, who sang several songs in Scots Gaelic. Anyone into traditional folk music should check her out . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmWx41O2DUU

SOB, to post the video, use the "youtube" button, and then take what's after the "=" and put it between ....in this case MnJgIq48C9k

For you folks in Central and South Jersey, The Chieftains will be at the Count Basie Theater March 12. Parking is free after 6 pm in metered lots. Weekend free parking is now in effect. Sure beats going to Newark and NYC.

If you watch very closley, Paddy has an air-compressor under his chair. He is 75 afterall and a LOT of wind is needed.
I do love Great Big Sea!

We were front row, not more than 20 feet from him, so I did watch him pretty closely. I noticed that he tended to flex his fingers a lot before/after playing his tin whistle or Uilleann pipes... I wouldn't be surprised if they're getting arthritic, he'll be 73 in August. All considered, he's still pretty spry!

Alyth MacCormack was with them again . . . she sure has an incredible voice!

I will be seeing them on 3/3 in Chicago. Love them.

I strongly recommend everyone listens to Irish Heartbeat Van Morrison with the Chieftains as a St. Patrick's Day prep course.
