How the heck did Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose not make the cut?

Probably because the Goose was never intended to be a private aircraft. Hughes was trying to create an aircraft for sale to the gov'mnt that could furnish transoceanic transport for large numbers of troops rather than using ships, which were vulnerable to enemy submarines. But there's another "HH" that got missed .... Hugh Hefner. He had a "stretch" DC-9 which he purchased new from Douglas, had it painted black, and customized (and do I mean customized!) the interior, including a Jacuzzi and the famous round bed.

The company sold it to a Mexican airline back in the late 1970s, which is why it probably didn't get mentioned. According to a quick Google search, it apparently is still owned and operated as a passenger jet by Aeromexico. Undoubtedly the interior has been restored to a more conventional configuration........
