Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts, prayers and phin power. Maybe it's silly to post about losing a pet, but I know sharing helps with grief and is a form of therapy, and you people are a great set of friends and therapists. Your posts have been shown to my kids, they are appreciative, and are moved by the kindness of people they've never met.
Today has been a tough one. I know time is the only thing that will truly heal my heart, but your support means so much and really helps. Thank you, BN.

Sally, I'm sooooo sorry that you've lost Scamp. The fact that you absolutely did the right thing not letting her suffer doesn't take yours and your family's pain away. Only time can help. I'm sorry Scamp was with you such a short time but I hope your wonderful memories of her will last long after the difficult memories of yesterday have faded.
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Jen

You are so right, Ravi.
We just got back from my Dad's. My two wonderful sisters had dug a hole and purchased flowers to plant over the grave. The vet hospital had sent her home in a little heavy cardboard box shaped like a coffin. She was wrapped in soft towels and when we said goodbye to her my daughter put some of her favorite dog goodies in. We wrote messages to her on it the lid and the kids helped bury her. My sister played her guitar and sang Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel.

Thank you all again for your kind words. You all have made this a little less painful.

Sally, maybe this will make you chuckle, just a little...
In 2000, I took a new job and had to move with just three weeks notice, so the family was back in VA for a few months. The first week I was gone my beloved little cat ran in the road and was killed. My boys saw it happen, and were devastated. But worse, on the phone they wailed, "But MOM, we can't have the funeral without YOU." Well, I wasn't due back for about a week, so they wrapped little Mixie in plastic and put her in the freezer.....

Oh gosh, aren't kids wonderful? The fact that they wanted you there and understood the necessity of freezering Mixie......To tell you the truth we have done that with pet rats, until we were able to get over to my Dad's house and bury them in his backyard.
With my last two dogs that I've had to put down, I just had the vet dispose of them, they were both over twelve, had had a good long life and were ailing. The kids knew the pet wasn't coming home. But with Scamp, she was so young, my kids didn't even know what happened and I felt it was important to let them be in on the "funeral" even though a little part of me knows it may seem gross or morbid. And it did seem to help the grieving process for them to pet her and love her one last time. I know it helped me.

So sorry for your loss. Years ago I had to have my dog (a little black and white parti-color Cocker with a black mask, named Bandit) put down. The vet had me take him into the back room and put him in a kennel. I put him in the kennel and said "good bye Bandit" to him. That was his cue and he raised his paw to shake hands with me as he had done thousands of times before . . . There I was, big 6'4" 250 he-man, bawling like a baby as I had to write them a check and then go back to my car . . . . . . Damn, there's something in the air making my eyes water again!

So very sorry. But, as my brother (who is president of his local humane society) told me when my beloved Rizzo died a few months ago of old age in my bed, "your pets hit the doggie lotto when they come to live with you." That made me feel so much better. Scamp knew how much you loved him and that made for a very good life for him.

I can relate,2 yrs. ago I had to have my faithful beagle,Bart, put down he was a great buddy for fifteen years...he was a super hunter as well as a great pet(I know a lot of people feel that a hunting dog cant be a pet)We shared great times together, hunting, hanging out,he loved loafing on my back deck drinking beer with me.My final gift to him was to put him to sleep...his body just Quit, when he couldnt get up one morning he looked at me and I could see he was done,at the vets I held him as the needle made contact with his leg his tale gave 2 wags and he was gone...I knew I made the right decision. Now my wife has brought home another beagle,I didnt want another and I dont want to form a bond to her like I did my Bart...my Dad who had many dogs some hunting some not said you are lucky to get one great dog in your life,Im sure I had mine.
